This video proves which is actually the better brand.

My internet is unreliable at the moment. Did Nikon win or was the test done incorrectly?

Nikon clear winner, could still read logo and back maybe ok:D

Why would you want to do this?

As someone who appreciates camera mechanisms and design, I don't like to see this done (I didn't watch it). It seems juvenile at best. Instead, the parts in those cameras, including the plates, could've been used to make another camera work again.

to be meaningful it should be a nikon F and a canon F1 --- fair is fair, sez i.

Nikon. Why? Because that is what I own.

Because it is a typical threat in a camera's life?

Do you often put your camera in a hydraulic press?

+1

I did watch it though, instant regret... poor Nikon

clive, I tried to be ironic.

And, with all that Canon/Nikon rivalry fought out in some forae, I see that video as work of irony too.

Whether those cameras and lenses should have served a better purpose...? Still to be discussed...

The test was indeed a waste, he could have applied increasing amounts of force to determine which had better resistance to crush

Would that necessarily have reflected real-life strain?

Pushing a camera from a table on hard floor repeatedly until function or alignment are affected seems more appropriate to me, but needs more samples to minimize effect of coincidence.

If one however does such rather static force tests, the strain points must be well chosen and be several of them, to reflect real life accidents (as that table fall). And static tests do not reflect inner damage by inertia, as encountered in a fall.

I notice he didn't test a Leica :]

OK, I'll admit it. I can never watch just one YouTube video. And if you would have done as I did and watch a few more of their videos, you realize this is their schtick. They look for uncommon things to crush with that hydraulic press and then crush them. Things like diamonds and ball bearings. CO2 fire extinguishers. Crystal balls. Hand grenades. Apparently they have nothing better to do with their time -- or their money.

I was not very fond of it either. Smashing two completely usable cameras is such a waste, especially if they have some collector´s value.

The proper and necessary tests have already been performed: in the arena of professional photographers in real life over many decades.

The conclusion, I believe, is that both systems are essentially equal. I believe there are a few other marques that are equally rugged.

The outcome with a Leica wouldn't be significantly different under a hydraulic press, no camera would withstand the pressure.

Which brand is "better" like any tool depends on the skills of the operator, talented photographers can make wonderful pictures with cheap equipment.

Benjiboy is right. Talented photographers have been making fine photographs for 177 years, often with primitive equipment. Untalented photographers can at least make videos of themselves crushing their gear.

Regarding the Leica jibe:

Wikipedia definition: Sarcasm is "a sharp, bitter, or cutting expression or remark....."

Actually, the result would have been far different if he had crushed a Leica. Some people would have been so incensed they would have been after his head. Unless it would have been one of those digital M9 Leicas. I would have paid to see that.
