Where to develop B&W movie Film?

I've recently obtained a pair of old 8mm movie cameras, and I've decided to play around with them to see what they can do. I have a roll of Fomapan 100 Movie film from J&C. However, I know of nowhere that will develop this stuff. Does anyone know of an 8mm film developing place? Or can I do it myself?

you can also drop it off at any walmart -
they ship to fuji who in turn ships to duane (and charge less $$ than shipping directly )
last i did it, they charged about 4.88$/ 100 spool ( 16mm too! ).

prep film in michigan also does it, they sell film as too.

I'm assuming you're in the U.S. There's a place called DuArt in NYC, that's the center for (mostly independently produced) motion pictures processing lab. There are other smaller labs in the area that do process for small budgets/student prices as well.

The best bet is to go check out your local university/community college and see if they have a class that uses the same kind of film and find out where they ship it to. That will save a lof of money and time.

Regular 8mm is hard to find, however I believe Super 8mm is quite easy.

I vaguely recall seeing movie film developing tanks on eBay, so if you're interested in doing it yourself rather than shipping it out, you might check there to see what's available. I've no idea how such tanks would be loaded and used, or how much chemistry they'd require.

Excellent, thanks for the suggestions. When I say regular 8mm, I'm refering to 2x8, which is double perf. 16mm film that is slit after development, yeilding 2 8mm strips.

It sounds odd that WalMart would do it, but I'm going that way in an hour so I'll check ...

Walmart will accept just about anything you throw at them, that does not mean they are doing it, but they send it to someone who will do it, be aware, it can take a long time if you ship it through Walmart to get some things returned to you.

I've heard Walmart do the 8mm cartridges but I'm not sure about the 16mm double run -

D8 (double run 16mm) is processed exactly the same as normal 16mm and is split down the middle afterwards as you say (or even telecinied to tape or code as 16mm and reverted to two images in post) this makes the links in my previous post even more pertinent as we are talking about the same thing (16mm in the processing stage)

Super 16mm film is used by many production companies to make many current TV shows and some movies even blown up to 35mm for projection, so it shouldn't be hard to find a facility to do the processing for you (the chemicals don't give a hoot how many sprockets there are) if thats what you want to do, they may not be able to do the splitting but I have seen splitters around in odd places for very cheap $$$ or you could make one yourself if you're that way inclined ...

Possibly just after the new year I'm going to start cross processing my own Plus-X B&W 16mm reversal stock and also some D8 from a friends camera (too busy right now) - If I get good consistent results I'll check up and see if you got yours done, if not feel free to send it down here to NZ and I'll get to work on it for ya ..

What stock have you got ? reversal (slide +ve) or neg ? Kodak, Ilford etc...

I have FomaPan R100 reversal stock, from J&C.

Wal Mart says that they don't do anything other than "regular film". I at least think that that's what they said, as I couldn't understand anything the lady said in horrible English. They said "we run slide", which I'm assuming means that they do 35mm slides, but that's obviously not what I want. And can you believe that they charge 60 cents per slide.

So I don't think that they even send out movies. I'll have to find another place. And as to slitting the film, I can build a film slitter, no big deal.

How are you processing (or going to process) your own film?

I got a lomo tank - all the recipes are there in that thread and I think some links to home-built tanks if you cant find a Lomo

The cost per foot for processing in cine labs is also pretty high and I'm not surprized you got that sort of response from Walmart - if anything is non-standard you get either passed round randomly to different departments, a look of contempt or some ridiculously high (made up on the spot) price intended to scare you off - not that I've been to walmart myself, just sounds familiar from similar stores here in NZ...

i've given them both color and b/w double run 8mm film.
it took anywhere between 1 and 2 weeks to process depending on the workload at dwayne's. just write " 8mm movie film " in the special instructions box.

fuji processes all of walmart's ( and sam's club ) "send out orders"
they'll do c-41, but send e6, b/w and movie stock to dwaynes. i've been sending my film to them for the better part of 5 years. they aren't a pro-lab by any means, but for $4 (usd) double prints from a 24 exp roll of 35mm film, or $4.88 (usd) for movie film to be processed, i really can't complain too much. besides some of the folks that say they process movie film, collect the film and forward it to fuji or dwaynes and charge an extra few dollars. why not just send it straight there, and get the "tracking number" to boot
