We all do know that most arguments against inkjet are made by people who don't have the tools (proper inkjet photo printers) AT HAND, so are ignorant
yes there are a lot of people who have no clue and hate ink and file images, true, but there are also people who know what they are talking about
and don't believe some of they hype about anything .. i believe some of the hype but not all of it.

A substantial minority of inkjet printer users mixes their own pigments....

sounds good !
"Artisanal" is a tiresome, trendy, cute Brooklyn buzz word.
maybe, but it is a word that is used often to refer to something made by hand "the old fashioned way" in france for example
there are bakers who make bread deemed "artisanal" because it is made the same way the baker's father or great grand father might have made it,
and it carries the lable "artisanal" because several years ago ( 10-15? ) breads were being made commercially, and had lost some of its soul
( or something like that ) so it was a way to differentiate more generic type breads from things made by hand.
very much like one would differentiate a machine print where the operator was alseep at the switch with one who payed attention to every detail
or a "custom" print..
as said, i have no argument that digital and ink have artistic merit, but i would not say it has anything to do with michael angelo or people like
Vaughn or Andrew O'Neil who bring a 8x10 cameras places, process the film and make carbon prints, similar but not the same league
as making a beautiful file tuned in editing software and printed in hand filled ink cartridges on japanese paper with a computer conduit...
i would call one a bit more "artisanal" using the french bread example than the other, unless the ink person make the computer themselves,
and the printer too ...

No one used the word "artisinal" until a relative few years ago. It's so overused I could puke. Coming soon to a gas pump near you: artisinal gasoline.
Actually, I hear the word far more from jokes, humor videos and people hating on the word than it actually being used IRL.

Yes, it's a perfectly good word with a fairly exact meaning.

My point is that it is so overused and probably often incorrectly. When I see/hear anything "artisinal," I laugh and pay no more attention to whatever it is. I don't like stupid trends. "Oo! Oo! It's non-GMO, gluten free, small batch, sustainable, artisinal water!"

Where does the rapid evolution of photography leave us? With a lot of different choices.

Also some choices that weren't available before.

How many palladium prints were made in 2018?

More or less than the number of palladium prints made in 1968? 1978? 1988?

My guess would be more now than for any of those years. Definitely a ton more carbon prints being made than ever before in last 50 years. The inkjet negative has caused a revival of alt processes.

Evolution? Deevolution? Revolution?

I would guess that tri colour gum over palladium in 2018 was pretty healthy, I did over 500 myself and I know many schools are teaching young workers... I agree with Vaughn the inkjet neg has been the key.
this week I introduced a wet plate worker to gum over palladium, she has made 17 20 x 24 prints this week..

I say Revolution

Carbon, inks, R4 prints and rest of talks like this has nothing to do with photography.
Photography wise here is no change. Amount of gifted people doesn't change. Amount of dross I have seen on all of these palladuim-shmadium alternatives is the same if not more than in images taken with the phones.

Actually, quite good so far. Got out of bed at 1pm to a nice sunny day. Unfortunately, the the sun leaves my backyard by 12:30, so I had to take my cup of tea and find some sun! I had a good night of platinum/palladium printing...in bed by 5am.

You flipped the definition of 'photography' from the obvious techincal evolution we are involved with (discussing) here to the evolution of asthetics in photography -- in what appears to be an excuse to air your personal bias and hate on the state of work produced by others. Seemed to be a strange thing to do, so I thought you might be having a bad day.

jnantz -- I have seen images posted by Kevin Sullivan of the platinum and palladium bars he melts down to make us the salts for printing...cool!

I doubt there is even one photography student in Europe who ever heard of tri colour gum over palladium.

That is truly a shame, and it tells me Europe is at least 5 years behind the wave, it will hit you soon, if you go to my site you will see a young lady from Italy (23years old) took a residency with me here last year. I have done two coached three residenceys, all women btw in gum over pallladium.. hang on AgX the world of photography is coming your way...

I have friends in may city's in Europe who are doing alt.. A woman from Sweden, another woman from St Petersberg Russia, a couple of dudes in France and a couple of workers in Italy... if I put my noodle to this I could probably list over 30 European Gum Tri Colour workers......There are facebook groups on Alt Process that are about 100x more active than Photrio or Large Format Photography, where I am active and it is amazing the workers and friends wanting to learn Alt

The closer we all get to seeing and producing what we intend the happier everyone will be. Peeping through a viewfinder, or under a darkcloth, and seeing what you need to see has evolved. Anything electronic used to facilitate that will continue to improve. At some point the value of the SLR/prism and mirror flopping around will be surpassed.

The one value that photographers must have is their ability to see and produce in ways that the casual shooter cannot. As technology moves into the future, less and less of that comes from the camera.

I hardly know anyone who still does even plain processing of film. And I am constantly around with photography students from various academies.
As a repeatedly said, we are living in different worlds.
