What's your latest new old camera ? (Part 2)

Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super. I've come to like that 1950's Zeiss Ikon look.

With this camera,

- all shutter speeds work and are accurate
- self timer works and the gears sound good
- Zeiss Tessar 50/2.8 glass is clear, aperture blades clean
- focus is completely accurate (split image in center)
- slightly dirty groundglass
- meter reads high by 1/2 stop (visible in finder and top plate)
- clever and elegant rewind mechanism
- wonderful build quality and attention to detail
- came with near-new case and interesting steel-chain strap
- Zeiss 115mm f/4 lens included, glass is clear
- Leather is completely flat (no bumps)
- Based on the case, the camera was used, but only very lightly. Maybe for a few vacations.

Anything not to like?

Well, yes. The previous owner scratched his SSN (*) on the chrome in the rear of the top plate. I'll investigate if I can do anything to fix this.

(*) For those outside the U.S., "SSN" is the "Social Security Number". "Social Security" is a Government plan to pay retirees from pre-retirement income. The SSN serves as a form of identification. People were encouraged to enscribe their SSN on valuable items to aid in theft recovery.

Yes. The Adaptall-2 mount for Canon has the button to put the lens into its auto setting so you can use your AE-1 in shutter priority.

Thanks. I finally worked out how to remove the lens last night. Never had to deal with this sort of mount before.

Today's junk shop finds: Minolta SRT200 with 45f2 and 28f3.5, and Pentax ME Super with 50f1.7, all for $30.

I always love these stories.
Of course.....i would "love" them a lot more if i were the lucky so-and-so that was the recipient.

Interesting cameras, best of luck with all of them. I recently purchased a black Bronica S2A (late version) and a 75mm f2.8 Nikkor H.C., I owned one of these back in 1977 and missed it. For now I'm sticking to B&W film because I still have my darkroom and can enjoy it to it's fullest that way.

I could never sell it so I gave it all to a good photographer friend of mine when I gave up photography completely in 2002.

I lugged it with a very heavy Benton tripod all over the South Downs in Sussex, took readings with a Pentax Spot meter and ended up with some of the best images I ever took. Decided to sell my Leica M5. It's fixed, working, probably will last forever now but if it ever did go wrong I don't think I could cope with the bill. Decided I liked the lens I'd bought for it, so stuck with the 'M' mount and found a lovely Bessa R2. What a great camera. Feels great, feels nice in the hand (nicer than the M5 perhaps), perfect.

Canon Canonet QL17 GIII. Excellent condition but will need a CLA as the seals are not great.

Canon EOS 300v plastic fantastic. I could not pass this one up for the price.

I'm getting me a very good looking Canon F1 new with a 50/1.4 lens from a local seller. The body has new light seals and the lens was CLA'd.
I always wanted to try this camera (I'm a Nikon man) so I hope to pick it up shortly.

That's a very pretty F-1, Bert. I shoot with both Nikon and Canon manual focus. Your F-1 might take a bit of getting used to, you being a Nikon guy, but it'll be worth it, IMO. The New F-1 is a superior photographic tool.

I'm looking for the winder as the full motor drive may bump the weight up a bit much. In terms of keeping things simple I also don't have the AE finder. Purely manual F1-N with the partial metering screen, (AV automation is still available but without shutter speed indication in the viewfinder).

If you do fit a motor drive be careful NOT to lose the drive coupling covers. The camera body alone, without the screw covers, is not light tight and any film you have loaded will suffer fogging.

I read about the Canon AE Power Winder FN and that you need it for the Canon locked-out the shutter-priority mode unless you bought either this Canon AE Power Winder FN or the Canon AE Motor Drive FN.

So I will look for a motor winder or motor drive (I don't mind the weight). The F-1 even looks cool with the winder.

[EDIT: I saw one on Ebay but the price was Euro 129 - too much for my taste. I'm thinking about 50-75 max]

I know it's confusing Frank but the original F1 had a all mechanical shutter, the next updated version was the F1n also all mechanical but had a wider I.S.O range and a larger wind on lever stand off.
Toad Man has bought a F1-N that's a completely different animal which has an electromechanical shutter and was the final version of the F1 that also has the AE metering prism finder.
