Yes I know what you mean. I'm more Nikon than anything else, but I realize they all make good products. It seems that with classic analog gear, Nikon is the most popular. But with modern DSLR's, Canon is probably by far the most popular. And it seems those digital Canonians are are a little snobbier than the rest.

Don't misunderstand me, I've two F2s, a F2AS and a F2A, and a FM (I would also like to buy a titanium FM2T sooner or later), as well as two F-1Ns, a F-1 old, a FTb and a T90, I like all these cameras, but I also like material from other builders, Pentax first but in the last months I became very fond of Fujicas for instance, as well as Soviet gear, Prakticas etc...they are all interesting cameras.

Same for me, i have, for Nikon, the F2AS, Nikon F black with plain prism, and a FG. And i have owned many other nikons in the past.
For Canon currently one F-1N, then a 1984 Olympics F-1N, and a mint F-1 old. Plus an EOS 5.

But I know that many other manufacturers have done very good cameras, from the ones i've taken a look at, i would happily use a Minolta XE-5, a Yashica FR-1, Mamiya NC1000, Olympus OM-1, Pentax MX, Yashica Electro 35, etc etc etc.

At the end the camera is just a tool; the most important part in the system is the photographer. Now, with lenses I would make an exception, and that is that some systems have a more restricted line of lenses. For example if one would like to have a 35/1.4, it wouldn't be easy to find in other systems. Or it would not exist.

Now, my personal preference goes to Canon -- because I like the F-1N more than the other cameras I've used, and I enjoy many of the Canon lenses I own.
 
My Maxxums 7000 and 7000i arrived form KEH today. It's a good thing I ordered 2-the 7000 is going back. When you put it in MF the focus motor disengages form the lens but you can hear the focus motor running. It won't fire the shutter unless you have what's in the AF brackets in focus. And it only takes about 4 or 5 pictures and then stops like it's the end of the roll. I tried 2 rolls of film and same thing with both. I'll exchange it for another 7000, and if the second one is bad I'll send it back for refund and look for one on Ebay. And the Minolta 35-105 lens was sold as Excellent but has scratches in the front element worse than Bargain lenses I've bought. But I'm not going to send it back because I won't be able to use the 7000i and it was only $35. I'll get a better Maxxum lens later and let this one be my "starter" lens.

On a positive note, the 7000i is neat. The custom function card has a 2 great settings that leaves the leader out during rewind-great for film I develop myself-and the card allows the shutter to be set in 1/2 stop increments instead of full stops for better tweaking in manual mode. The top LCD display lights up which is uncommon on older cameras. The RC-1000L remote cord is very long about 16'. That adds flexibility to remote firing options.

Wow, those Maxxxxxxxxxxum 7000 cameras look mint! They surely look very 80s and I bet they made quite a visual impact back then.

Yes, they did. They made a HUGE impact on photography back when they were released. And you're right, they look "very 80s" but at the time it was also a very modern look. Recall the Canon T70 from that same era that had sort of similar style treatments with the push buttons instead of dials and levers. It took the advent of the Canon T90 a year later that really set photography onto its current path of streamlined body styles.

This is when Minolta lost me. Up until then, I liked their cameras. Couldn't get into the polycarbonate globs with push buttons. Except for the Nikon F4, which retained the traditional shutter speed dial.

The Nikon F4s is one of my favorite cameras to look at - I like its design and handling.
 
A Cosina CX-2 with motor wind for $40 (inc. shipping). I like these simple small models of cameras (like my Ricoh FF-1 or Olympus XA2). I like to carry one of these as a point&shoot in my pocket.

It seems that the Lomo LC-a is a copy of this camera, but with a poorer lens and no self timer.

My replacement 7000 came in from KEH. They didn't have another EX one so I got one in LN- and they decided not to charge me the difference. This thing looks like new. It even has the plastic protector inside and the clear adhesive on the bottom. I ran a roll through it and it did well. Now I just need to develop it.

In the past week of so, Olympus Trip 35 with good meter and a Canon TLB with a bad meter, but all else works. Also picked up 100 sheets 8 by 10 Ilford Warmtone in an unopened box for 4.99. J
