nothing is wrong with that brian
but if a newbie is looking to "post count"
to judge whether someone might have
experience, been here for along time offering help
and sees someone with 20 thousand posts thinking
" this person has been here forever, look at the post count"
only to realize the posts were 19thousand non sequiturs in
a thread that questioned the meaning of life, all made in 12 months and nothing
that has to do with photographic technique, or photography experience ...
it can be a bit misleading is all i am suggesting
in other words, if someone looks at post count
and thinks it is anything deeper than just posts counted ... they might be in for a ride.

I think that it is wrong to automatically equate some perceived "rudeness" with malicious intent. Often the person is being brutally frank but that is all. For those that watch The Big Bang Theory, Shelton is not being rude it is just the way his mind works. When he is comically trying to be malicious he tries to think people heads into exploding as in the film Scanners.

hi gerald
i agree, things are not always what they seem
in the medical field it is called "bedside manor"
and still after 13 pages i don't understand what
the point is for someone who is annoyed by
a thread, who doesn't want to answer a post
to post some sort of rude remark ( whether frank or maliciously intended )
when they can just avoid the whole thing altogether, and NOT POST ANYTHING?

does someone who is just starting out, really need that kind of answer?
im guessing if a "rude poster" was a kid, and an school teacher made it a point
to publicly answer questions in front of the classroom the same way
(rude/frank ) the kid's parents would be pretty miffed. and before people
start suggesting i am being PC or "liberal trash"
its called the golden rule ...

Being frank is an art. I worked for Frank and he was good at it. When I spoke frankly he always asked me to be earnest... because he was Frank. I was better at being Earnest in conversation than was Frank. Go figure.

Mr. Koch, several times in this thread you have made references to what this site is and is not and I think you are, to put it respectfully but firmly...totally out of line. This is a community comprised of all ability levels, nationalities and walks of life. Expectations of what APUG is to each person are as diverse as the people who come here. Some show up and stay, some pass through, like any virtual or in person community.

APUG seems to work best answering brief technical questions. It is impractical to ask for an explanation of say the Zone System. It is not being rude or flippant to suggest that the inquirer read a book on the subject. In the past in such situations I have often referred people to Ansel Adams series of books.

And yet MY expectations as to what APOG should be do not matter. You contradict yourself.

Was that intended to be frank, or rude?

I think the "old grumpy" folks need to realize that without the newbies, the future availability of film diminishes greatly. We need new participants to keep it viable. Answer questions (regardless of how many times it's been asked) politely. Post a link, rather than say look it up.

I think newcomers should be patient, too. It takes awhile to figure APUG out. People come here with different interests. We have our gear heads, who are mostly interested in equipment. We have our endless testers, who are happy plotting curves. We have image makers, who want to make expressive photos. There are other types, too, and (more often than not) people fall into overlapping categories.
In time, you will find members who are more closely aligned with your specific interests. You'll end up giving their posts (and advice) more weight than others. In the 10+ years I've been here, I've come to trust certain members over others, due to the fact that I feel a greater affinity with them and what we want photography to be for us.

I get frustrated at times with the advice to use search, since that so often fails for me. An example, the thread at (there was a url link here which no longer exists) has the words 'Metering for slide film' at the start of its title. A subject I wanted to investigate this morning. But if I search for that exact string of words in titles only, I get no results.

I find on-site google searches to be lacking as well.

When you use google itself, and do a site search, you get this: https://www.google.no/?gfe_rd=cr&ei...site:www.apug.org+"metering+for+slide+film"&*
- which seems to be a pretty exact result.

I am not sure why on-site google-searches always seem to be lacking a bit.

Y'know, a lot of the points in this thread, for good or ill, seem to have been made before in similar threads.

So I'm not sure why the OP didn't just search the APUG archive before starting a new one?

Seems a bit lazy and noobish and, frankly, lacking in moral fibre to me not to have done so without checking, or at least reading a few books before posting .

Haha. But, c'mon, this thread has been a great benefit to me at least. It's helping me populate my ignore list.

nope ...

i actually had a reply but sorry, i'm not going to take your bait ..

as previously mentioned there are often misleading or wrong posts ...
and often times high post counts, no background, no website or link to images, no clue
to see if the person is just a moniker with answers and 20,000 posts or someone who might have experience ...

you don't like threads, don't post in them, ignore the thread rather than adding
snark, passive aggressive and harsh comments.
new people are new, that is why they are here ... to ask questions and hopefully get
answers that are valid, not something like "using baking soda is OK instead of fixer" ...

my general advice would be to use them sparingly, if at all

IDK michael
the ignore list is perfect, too bad jorge isn't here, he would have a lot to say about it his list was big
topics have absolutely no interest and threads that end up a train wreck there is no reason not to ignore them.

i would not say sparingly at all. but use them as one wishes and enhance one's experience.
it is easy to see what is being ignored, at the bottom of a page there is a
phrase " ignored content " and you can click it and see what you have been missing ..
and usually its nothing

I hope Gerald didn't make it onto your ignore list. He's a chemist with a lot of real knowledge on many technical APUG topics, and has always been helpful to people here in my experience. Regarding ignore lists, my general advice would be to use them sparingly, if at all.
I concur. The "ignore list" isn't the perfect solution; in fact, sometimes it isn't really a solution at all. Perhaps self-control is the best solution. I currently have 2 people on my ignore list but every time I see the "show ignored content" button I seem to press it... just to see what I'm missing. I ignore people who are persistent and annoying jackasses, not intelligent but grumpy and frank/earnest/rude. Maybe I need some self-control too... who knows.

I like all the different "characters" here on Apug! really, it's just as good as Shakespear, or a Verdi opera. i mean, it all plays out in a fun way. I do not have any person on the ignore list. I always invite opinions that are different from mine. I think most people do. . . ..
regarding expectations on the internet. . . .. .I think most people , and almost all the new generation "understands" the new prevailing attitudes of being trite, petty, rude, obnoxious, flamming as they call it.

on a side note, why DO people take what is said on the internet , Personally? isn't the internet just another fake news? or fake reality? or just a simulation that is not real, more like an alternate ending to on going film, that hasn't ended. I mean, are we not ALL on the ride together.

I find it ridiculous that an "on-line person" (which is usually having a faker name) or an "on-line personality" like an Andy Kaufman type, WOULD BE OFFENDED!! Don't you all see the irony? a fake person interacting with another fake person, getting upset at a flame, which is not real emotive stuff, its junk to fill the void, while your waiting for the cycle to end! be it, in the darkroom, or laundry mat.

or is it the position that people believe they are real! and their on line persona is real too, and if their on line persona is subject to being ostracized or humiliated , that therefor they need to correct the injustice or what some may say . . . .. damaging slander~!

personally, I do not believe for a moment , that an on- line chat rooms are nothing more than an absurd form of entertainment!! it's all soo veryyy foreign!!

so why get upset, when the interactions are not real?

why... because fake name or not, all of us internet persona are human beings not automatons. At least I think we are.
