the other day i was on the phone with a customer service rep for an insurance company. she was rude and aggressive and it made me wonder why she
worked as a customer service rep, if she didn't want to offer customer service.

Money probably.

;-)

I hear you though. People are generally very forthcoming with help.

The usability can be optimised but there will always be new people with old questions (hopefully!).

I think it my be helpful for new users, when attempting to start new threads, to get a friendly pop-up window offering helpful suggestions such as: have you tried a google search?, an APUG search?, read the manual? When starting a thread asking a question, briefly mention what other sources you have tried to solve the problem.

Doing this may help reduce clutter, with the added benefit that if the poster follows the suggestions, he is likely to get better help from the forum.

Sorry, but this sounds very much to me like "Unless you are well informed and have no questions, we really don't want to talk to you". What's the point of a forum if not to be a forum for discussion?

Indeed. We're a question and answer forum. If the most our members can offer is to go read the 'effin this or use the 'effin that, then perhaps we should just rebrand the site APFU. I envision a new site logo with a middle finger focused onto ground glass. We can implement a point system for users reflecting the number of potential new members they've chased off.

For the most part we have interesting and informed people stop by. It's not like we get "How Do I Develop Film?" several times a week.

Well, it seems that there is a sense that older users are the problem. This would include you Brian. I guess.

I remember when I started using these forums. I knew a bit about photography but almost nothing about forums or other computer related tasks. I had real problems effectively searching for various topics that interested me and I had no idea how to post an image unless I was pinning a print to a cork bulletin board.

Some were quite helpful, others less so. But I expected to irritate some (and I did) but I also got some good advice from others. Even just posting links to other threads that dealt with my issue was incredibly helpful.

I have learned a lot more about photography over the past years, but even more importantly, I learned to use the forums. I would like to thank the lot of you for all your help. Don't give up on the rest. I think we need more analog fans, not fewer.

Perhaps the sense of 'old' being used is 'long-standing and bitter testosterone fuelled despiser of all things that weren't the case when they were young', in which case both PE and Brian fulfil only the first of those conditions, fulfilment of both being necessary for the statement to imply that either of them are 'done'.
Though I do sometimes wonder about Brian.

Brian is a criminal?

I think the 'problem' is the old users, not the new ones! ;-)

Actually, the older ones are the ones who have left us their knowledge and experience. It's all here in the older posts, going back to day one. But few will read them; instead they ask a question that has already been asked and answered many times before, and get answers from younger members with less knowledge and experience. That's okay, but I advocate taking some time to read through the older posts to get as many answers and learn as much as possible. There is a wealth of information there, and to me that is the prime advantage of a site like APUG.

Okay, let's try this instead.

Ah, so a small set of grumpy users orbits PE in what appears to be an eccentric way.
But I still don't see how that excuses Brian's running a meth lab?

Where am I in this picture... outside the Ven with PE's getaway car waiting for him?

P.S. don't wonder about me Lord Pdeeh... I have plenty of testosterone left... i put it to better use than getting feisty on Internet forums (most of the time, at least).

The young users already left because the grumpy users told them to Google the answer.
So Googling works for answering photographic questions but doesn't help give life to APUG. I guess winning half the battle is better than winning it all????

Well, this is exactly it. How on earth people expect a forum to grow, let alone be vibrant, if new users are initially told to read the manual or Google the answer is beyond me.

I'll bet if you Google that someone has already answered that question. Ha ha ha. Maybe I should go do something useful... like play with the Hasselblad pinhole body cap someone gave me. Seems like a stupid idea but it might be fun. Just stop me when I feel the need to post a question on reciprocity failure!

Have fun and have a good weekend, Brian!

Perfect answer.
