Except for a swimming pool, I've never been in water where you can see more than three inches.

Where do you go? What kind of film do you use? Do you, can you, use a light? I've never heard of underwater flash.

Okay! The camera is new to me. I anticipate using a fast C 41, I have the Nikon housing for an inexpensive Sekonic selenium meter, which I managed to find. Flash? from what I've read virtually essential below perhaps 30 feet. Electronic flashes for the Nikonos are available used; there are new continuous lamps out there which might be easier to use.

I'm a newbie to underwater photography. I bought the camera with the 35mm and 80mm just for the hell of it. Now...I'm giving serious consideration to getting certification for SCUBA diving.

That makes sense. I'll bet almost all who scuba dive would like photos of what they see.

I think the Nikonos is still the one serious and dedicated camera for underwater photography - even today the only digit*l cameras that can be used underwater (without a housing) are ruggedized point&shoots.

My Nikonos would seem to be SERIOUS defensive weapon! Talk about the camera as hockey puck! Only my Konica IIIa might be better, on the basis of weight alone.

I just bought a Sekonic...L-308S-U. Not sure what the letters are for.
It is nice to know that my Nikon/Canon SLR, that were CLA in the recent path, agree with this new meter. I am assuming it is pretty accurate.
It is very nice for tossing in a bag, as it is quite small..... About the size of a non-stupidly large Smart Phone.
I have a Mam RBZ, it has no meter, so the Sekonic will come in handy for that especially.

I have one of those. The "U" means youre going to take a few readings off your face before you realize you need to turn the meter around.

A nice meter, but the sensor shouldn't be on the same side as the display.

As to purchases, I bought four boxes of 4x5 FP4+ and two boxes of Ektar 100. On the gear side, I bought a Gaoersi zoom finder (58mm-150mm FOV for 4x5) to use on my Travelwide 65mm pinhole/100mm Tessar camera. And then there's the antique photos - I bought three CDVs and a booklet from the period, all of famous circus sideshow little people - one is Lucia Zarate, the Mexican Liliputian, the second is Tom Thumb, his wife, and their frequent collaborators Commodore Nutt and Minnie Warren, Tom Thumb's wife's sister. The third is another sideshow little person, whose name I forget. The booklet is a 16 page biography of Samuel Houghton, another circus sideshow performer.

Yeah...I never had "That Problem" with it.
You point the device one way for reflective and the other way for incident.
It probably would have cost A Lot more to be able to shoot the sensor both directions. I am not bothered by having to turn the meter to look at the numbers. Not like i use it 8 hours a day.

I don't always use a meter, but when I do I use spot or reflected metering

Incident has just never worked for me.

Mine is bright green. It is so bright that I have to wear sunglasses when I take it out, day or night.

Many (most?) light meters are arranged so that the sensor points forward and the dial is up. That way, whether in incident or reflected usage, the meter is always held the same way. Here is an example:



Ironically, I have an ancient Sekonic that works that way, but it uses selenium and goes no higher than ASA 200.

In a total bout of GAS, got this SB-15 Speedlight. I could've bought several much more modern flashes, but I wanted one of 1980's vintage with an analog dial in the back rather than the LCD display.

I've been an available light shooter for the last 45 years and like dark Tri-X photos, so I'll probably use this on occasions when I need soft bounce lighting or fill flash.

Just ordered another 2L Unicolor kit from Freestyle, and a variety of stuff from B&H photo. I needed more fixer, and some more PrintFile sleeves for 35mm. Also got a few things I haven't tried before: Microphen, Fuji Acros 100, Kentmere 100, and an Oriental Seagull 8x10 value pack of pearl paper with 2 rolls of tri-x.
