Oh, I absolutely agree, but I got tired of looking up something in a new article and then having whatever that was shoved in my face for weeks. If I am forced to use Google, I do it in the privacy mode. Most of the time DuckDuckGo is "good enough for government work" as the expression goes.

It's slightly more competitive if you search for "fujifilm c200 35mm". Regardless, I prefer DDG for my primary search engine... if I want to use google, I can always search for "!g fujicolor c200 35mm". The "!" shortcuts in DDG are very nice.

The other issue of course is that if I use DDG for searching, I don't suddenly get thrown Fujifilm camera ads on every website I visit.

Funny, I changed to DDG a few years back and I very rarely have to resort to Google. How long has it been since you tried it? DDG has really improved.

Cold is relative and, no, it’s not dark all the time. You must be thinking of Alaska and Minnesota. We have blue skies most of the winter. And while it does snow, I think I only shoveled 3-4 times last winter and don’t mind do so. I don’t have go to the gym and lift on those days.

As for cold, I’m a distance runnner and I run outside ALL YEAR. It’s a matter of how one dresses. Plus there are major advantages of the the cold in the winter. You get a break from yard work and outside chores. There are no bugs. Winter scenes to photograph are nearby, like right outside your door. There are hiking trails everywhere. I have one 3 blocks form the house that goes off in many directions for many miles.

Another photographic advantage of moving here, someone mentioned something about the high cost of real estate impacting one’s ability to have a darkroom. That wasn’t the case of me. I sold a 900 SF house in SoCal and bought a 2,700 SF house on a large lot that included a full, finished basement that has a 12x12 windowless room and able to do so WITH CASH.

Full disclosure: yes, there are some downsides. If you like to eat out, it’s chains and steaks. That’s about it. Ethnic food is rare or fake. If you like seeing current musical artists, you better like country/westerns because that’s what you’ll get. We do have a local jazz scene that’s really good though. If you come here from someplace else, especially the West Coast, some people will look down on you, forever. There is a high level of racism directed at the Native American population. There are others but things tend to balance out to the positive column.

I don't mean it's "gray" all the time, as in cloudy. I mean the hours of sunlight in winter are very limited. A lifelong nightowl I've worked overnights by choice and turned down day jobs for nearly 20 years now, but it's still nice to sleep until 4 PM (even on weekends I usually sleep until at least early to mid afternoon because it's just too hard to jerk my schedule around more than that) and still have some daylight left. My mood takes a HUGE hit even here in Georgia with the end of DST. I've often said if I were rich enough I'd have a house in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern so I never had to experience winter. I'm not joking either.

And sure, cold is relative - and for me it's anything under 70F, maybe 65 if it's sunny. After being overweight my entire life until then, in 1991 I got on a fitness kick and lost over 150 lbs, from somewhere barely north of 350, don't know for sure because I had stepped on a balance beam that went to 350 and wouldn't quite balance, to about 200, got into bicycle road racing, and have kept at least 90 of that (variable from time to time, but I've never been north of 260) ever since. I've also not been warm since. Well that may be exaggerating - slightly. But the truth is I get cold VERY easily compared to most people I know and I HATE HATE HATE even what others would call "cool" weather.

I do like country and western, but not JUST that, but I'm not one for live concerts much. But I do love trying all kinds of ethnic food and will like most of it. There are perks in addition to the job market to living at least near a metro area, thus my plan on retirement to go to the north GA mountains within an hour and a half or so of Atlanta where I can come into town any time I feel like enough, but LIVE in the country.

I certainly do understand the appeal of living out there though.

No inspections? You must realize that not all people are responsible. Half of them have mental capacity lower than median, and 10% are basically imbeciles that we can't legally do anything about. So how not inspecting vehicles for environmental reasons can be a good thing?



Not for long.

I have never lived ANYWHERE that had vehicle inspections in the sense of many states' safety inspections. I grew up in TN and lived there until I moved away to the Atlanta area briefly for the first time at age 37, came back after about six months, then moved back to the Atlanta area at age 41 and lived here ever since. TN has no vehicle inspections of any kind. GA doesn't have any state-wide, but there are emissions inspections required for the counties around metro Atlanta due to consistently failing Federal air quality standards. But emissions only, nothing else is checked. It takes about five minutes if you roll up when there isn't a long line. The place I go has two bays and a helper and I never have to wait long. They basically connect their computer to your computer then hand you a printout (which you don't need as it goes to the state computers anyway) and you pay 'em about $20 plus or minus and roll on out.

Honestly, it's a big racket. If you fail, you take the car to be fixed. Once you spend X dollars (I forget) on repairs, if it still fails, you present the repair receipts and get a waiver for another year anyway. And people have been known to register the car in the name of a family member that lives far enough out from the metro that their county doesn't have inspections.

Not sure how that helps, if it's linked back to your device anyway via a cookie or the like. I suppose you can just delete your cookies. But the thing is I LIKE letting a lot of sites set cookies. That’s funny. I have 3 cars that I use as daily drivers and none of them even have computers. 2 of them didn’t have any emissions equipment from the factory. ‘59 Volvo, ‘65 Triumph, ‘83 Volvo.

I don’t heat my basement darkroom. During the winter it stays at about 62 degrees. During the summer it gets to about 72 degrees. I adjust chemical temperature as needed but don’t mind the chill. I just layer up.

Here we are in the middle of summer and I motorcycled across the Beartooth Pass this morning. It was 41 degrees on top. It felt invigorating. ;-)

Here’s my bike at 10,947 feet.

And, if you notice my plate, it indicates “Permanent.” All “toys,” be they motorcycles, 4-wheelers, snowmobiles, boats, trailers, etc. receive permanent tags in Montana. I bought the bike new last year and never have to register it again.

I'm not sure I'd be as trusting of the water as Vince-- and I say that having drunk straight out of glacial waterfalls in Glacier National Park-- but that was in the 1970's. I had family in Whitefish for decades, but that place has apparently turned into a resort town, and I don't think I'd enjoy living there now.

Our water in Billings is sourced out of the Yellowstone River and the water department publishes the monthly test results on their web site. It looks safe enough for me and I’ve been drinking it for 31 years.

Yes, Whitefish has become rather upscale. It’s wants to be another Big Sky or Jackson Hole.

This means the largest burden resp. threat for the european chemical industry. And consumers hardly will be buying film when they wonder how to heat their homes.

Yes, you are certainly correct about the situation with natural gas. This winter is going to be a big mess. Most people in N America aren't really aware of the problem in Europe regarding gas. LNG shipments can't replace the volumes of Russian gas.

Hard to imagine how the big chemical plants like BASF etc can operate.

Yes, rust can be an issue but mine are rust free. I just did the struts and rear shocks on the ‘83 a few years ago. I put a beefed up anti-sway bar and bushings in the ‘59 and it handles like a race race, although a slower one.

Have I Got News for You called this out in their opening graphics as far back as 2009, I believe. I suspect Putin didn't believe Europe would actually sanction him given the amount of control he had over the European gas supply.

It's one of the few times Trump said something intelligent, when he warned against Europe (specifically Germany) being so reliant on a single producer of energy.

Given who the UK appears to have as potential leaders for this crisis, it's going to be a bleak winter.

I put Stabill in the tank, hook up the battery tender, and park my bike in November. I don’t get back on it until it hits 70 in the spring, maybe 65 if it’s bright and sunny. The first year or two I rode I’d ride on those sunny days in the 50s but realized that I just didn’t enjoy it, so I no longer do.

People are different. I hate being wrapped in multiple layers of clothing against the cold almost as bad as I hate the cold, and people have asked me when it gets cold enough that I’ll wear gloves, to which my answer is, “only when it’s so cold I need them to prevent my fingers from shattering.”

OTOH others complain about temperatures in the 80s and I’m just getting comfortable for outdoor recreation. I don’t event consider it hot until it hits 90 and I don’t stop riding the motorcycle until the heat index at least goes over 95. Granted that can be in the upper 80s actual temperature here because it’s so muggy it’s like breathing hot soup. You got us on the humidity.

People differ. I get cold much more easily than most people and I HATE cold.

Exactly that we are all different when it comes to temperature. During my 70 years I’ve had over 20 addresses and lived as for west as Honolulu and as far east as Germany. I lived way upstate New York near the St. Lawrence and even time in Augusta, GA. All have their pluses and minuses. I suppose the biggest minus for me isn’t temperature but humidity. I don’t like that high humidity at all. in 2006 I ran the Duluth Marathon and it was tough, having trained here in our usual 20-30% humidity and then running 26 miles with it over 80%. I suppose Hawaii had some of the best weather with it about 75-80 all year. San Diego also comes close.

BTW, I rode my motorcycle in every month of the year last year. That includes every month on our Montana winter. The only one that was marginal was February when I did get it out but only got about 20 miles in. If there isn’t snow or ice on the roads, I’ll ride. I have pretty good gear plus grip heaters.

A long time friend recently retired from Rochester to Olympia, Washington. I asked him, doesn't it rain all winter there? His reply was "yes but it's very easy to shovel, and the temperature rarely falls much below freezing."
