Something nice for the girl friend is also a good suggestion of course - the only problem would be figuring out exactly what kind of LF camera she'd like  .
no no - that's the easy part. She definately would want a GANDOLFI...

a bigger GANDOLFI? hmm - nice...

studio stand: have one.

here is my "problem": I seem to have almost all I need.Photographywise.

so maybe I'll but one of those REALLY expensive Danish lamps! a big ol' PH lamp.

If you don't know what that is.....check this out:
http://www.lauritz.com/Item/Item.aspx?LanguageId=1&ItemId=576390&ReturnUrl=&nBids=5&STA=20

that would go nicely with my GANDOLFI...
but I fear it is too expensive (estimated value is 8000$ !)

Buy a really nice watch, the one thing you always have on you. Have it engraved. Or take the one print you know your parents loved (I hope that is a possibility) and print it as well as you can, buy the most wonderfull frame etc (have it made) and install it with perfect lighting. That would help you get rid of a good share. Save the rest and buy/do something when you need something...

Kind regards,

Onno

Forget that understated Danish elegance. Go for something a bitwild. You could always use it as a prop.

I'm a birchwood and white walls man myself, but Rooth's glass is just so completely over the top it appeals. It's more transparant and less plastic in real life than it looks in the photos. The fiskvägg is fantastic.

Not in a house with three small children though.

I'll add my voice to the others and use the money to buy time or travel. A definite project, but not gear. I have a hankering to travel the E6 from Nordkapp to Sicily, taking trannies along the way. Your windfall would pay for the petrol as far as, perhaps, Bødø

Hi Emil

if I'd have a lot of money to spend and absolutely no idea on how spend them, then I would first ask myself if I do really need to spend them

besides, how about studio stuff and studio props? I see often in your pictures "vintage-like" props. You could spend some of the money to buy items you will use in your compositions (as props or for still life, etc). Of course you won't need to spend all that money on such items. You may want to buy a gift to your fiancee... How about some dress or fine lingerie? (no joking, I'm serious - plus, you could portrait her dressed with your gift  ).

Finally, you could spend the remaining on anything that could improve/inspire your photographic skills. Maybe a print from Saudek is way too expensive, yet tempting. But you can always add more (expensive) art books from Saudek and others to your library. And since you're interested a lot in alternative photography and ancient printing tecniques, there's a lot of related material that money can buy: books, tools, raw chemicals (especially the expensive ones, e.g. those required for platinum/palladium, gold toner, etc.)... I don't know if you use digital negatives for big prints... If not you might want to give it a try and buy the required equipment.

A trip for a photographic workshop organized by another master sounds very cool. I'd definitively approve the choice. In fact, that will probably be my next investment. I'm actually working a lot and saving all money is possible to come in Denmark at the beginning of the next course at Vraa Hojskole! Will write soon a private message about this idea.

Best,
Fulvio

hi fulvio

sounds really nice! you'd be very welcome - I just hope yoi wont get dissapointed..

"..Maybe a print from Saudek is way too expensive.."
just to be clear: it is SUDEK, not saudek.. (I respect Saudek, but SUDEK is unrevivalled...)

You might split it into 4 pieces (not necessarily equal) and do the following.

Buy some material object that will always remind you of your parents and what they have meant to you in your life. I have Uncle Joe's oak tree growing in my back yard from an acorn he gave me and Wren's bedroom suite in my guest room and a framed print from the MFA from my mother. Oh yes, I also have the memories and these are just touchstones to connect me to the memories.

Find someone or some organization which makes a difference in other people's lifes and share your abundance with them.

Buy yourself something you have always wanted, but thought to be way too frivolous to waste your money on. Mine was once a Zero Image 6X9 camera. Oh, what fun I've had with it.

Where is it that you have always wanted to go or what is it you have always wanted to do that you haven't allowed yourself to go to or do? Go there or do it. Your parents always wanted the best for you . . . they still do.

These all sound very easy and probably aren't. Good luck and enjoy the freedom this little windfall has given you. Bill Barber

I am a hypocrite, as I own more cameras than is allowed by law. however I must ask what you would do with another or two more Gandolfi's?

My suggestions were intended to have you look outside the darkened box, with which we are all so enamored, and to do something that would make a difference in your life and in that of others.

Guess I should get rid of a dozen of so Olympus OM bodies and associated extra lenses before I give that sermon again. You might look at my original post again and see what, if anything, is in there for you. Bill Barber

he he - well, in DK we never see 8x10 enlargers for that price - extreamly rare..

but I am getting closer to a decision.
My brother has a huge 30x40cm camera that I might buy...

and my best idea for now: One of my former colleques is a fantastic painter..
So I just ordered a painting from him, with my girlfriend as model...
so looking foreward to see the result.
I'll upload the painting, but it'll take some time as he is a busy man..

my Twin brother asked if I wanted to take a small travel with him - amazing: we are 47 (don't tell) and we have never travelled together..
that's an idea..

My suggestion - spend at least some of the money taking a trip which will give you plenty of opportunity to use the cameras you already have. The most valuable commodity today is time - if you can buy some, I recommend you do it!

I agree. Take a once-in-a-lifetime trip and spend your time photographing. You'll think of your parents all the while. Every good photograph which results from your trip will always remind you of them, especially if you dedicate them. Then, when it's your turn to leave something behind, leave some of these good prints. That way even your grandchildren's children will talk about you —and your parents— and say, "Wow. He must have really loved them".

Hope this doesn't seem too corny to you. I just had a similar experience, so I assure you that my words aren't empty. In any case, "bon courage!"
