I'm sure the original poster has already found a camera, but I agree this is excellent advice. I bought my first DSLR about 11 years ago (Nikon D100). At the time it was a very good camera, but it certainly had it's limitations. Many of those are gone with the newer DX cameras, but not all of them. The poor viewfinder is still there. So is the terrible selection of quality wide/normal prime lenses. For anyone looking to get serious in photography I would recommend saving for a full frame camera. A used D700 would be an excellent first camera, and I love the D800E I have. The D600/D610 is excellent as far as image quality goes, but I haven't played with one much. With whatever one chooses to buy, make sure you can get all the lenses you think you will need. The DX cameras still seem face a shortage of wide angle prime lenses, and the longer primes don't always seem ideally spaced on DX sensors.
