It was cold enough this afternoon at the south-west corner of Canada that I decided to do up my jacket.

The high temperature at the airport today was 7 Celsius (45 F).

Toronto, Ontario, Canada is considerably south of us here (about the same latitude as southern Oregon). This morning it was -23 Celsius (-9 F) there.

It got up to -30 Celsius this morning in Yellowknife.

We almost always go through a dry spell at the turn of the year- this year is typical, and it's been mild. High of 78F here today, 65 at 8pm, forecast low of 50 tonight.
Even in the nearby mountains it's mild. At Big Bear Lake @ 7300 ft. it will just touch 32F. Not good at all for the ski operations, though.

It was a little chillier just north of you, Matt. At Barnet Marine Park this afternoon (3:00 pm-ish), I had to pull on some Polartec 200 fleece (Thank you LL Bean) so that I could be comfortable shooting at the water's edge. No doubt, down in Steveson tomorrow am, the same clothing will be pressed into service (brrr...not).

As long as I have a chance to get used to it, I can handle it fairly cold. Even around 0 F recently didn't feel too bad. But when it's both windy and cold, then I give in and put on the long undies (though under ripped jeans) and many layers of tops. My lungs give out first (asthma sucks), but I've been doing ok this winter. I haven't had time to get out and shoot, though - that'll be the real test. Just check the recent temps for southwest Iowa - mostly single digits (except last Saturday - 50s ) and some nasty cold windy stuff coming this Sun - Tues.

Here in the Ottawa area the news stations are saying that for the last 2 days straight, we have been colder than the South Pole. That is an amazing thing to hear when you grew up in Southern California, Don

Let me give you a view about my country Turkey. Its a rectangular geography and upper and lower side is covered with very high and long mountains. And east of the rectangular is covered with mountains also. Our North is Russia and Ukraine and there are 300 days snpw or rainfall at northern region. Its like canada, all covered with high trees and people grows tea , honey, corn, and there are big fishing goes on Black Sea.
Black Sea is one of the most stormy sea in the world and there is a special boat type at here , wider and higher and deeper groove than most Alaska boats.

South is Med and there is a mountain group called Taurus Mountains. We call Med , WhiteSea opposite to Black Sea at the North and every year 25 million tourists visit there. Beatiful place and snow is rare.
East is 3000 -5000 meters high and generally minus 25 degrees at winter. Erzurum , Van , Agri , Muş , Tatvan are the among the coldest.
There are more than 1 million refugees living in south east and its a very tough life. They are at Syrian Border.
West is Aegean and Izmir ,Istanbul and Trakya , 10 celcius at winter time and extremelly tourist magnet place.
Middle is flat and cold , capital city Ankara is there.

At Christmastime I noted to my Dad at how northerners move south, but had never heard of it happening in reverse. I guess it happens, but I've never heard of it. It's COLD up there. I don't see how you all can take it. But I guess once it gets below about 20, you can't tell any real difference.

In my longish lifetime, I have been outdoors in temperatures that ranged from -45 C (-50 F in International Falls, MN) to +45 C (Saudi Arabia, which does not use Fahrenheit, since then it would seem hot). Note that digital cameras are only rated for use from 0 C to +40 C, which could inhibit ones vacation choices when skiing or beachgoing in the tropics.

The temperature of my back porch under translucent plastic roof sheeting hit 122F (50 Celcius exactly!) at 11 am yesterday. Worries? Nope, I cranked up the aircon and couched down to watch the Australia versus England test cricket on TV. The heatwave continues. The aircon is still on.

The greatest heat I've ever been in was 123F (hottest recorded) in Palm Springs, Ca., Aug. 1, 1993. As I was still young enough to be young and stupid, I decided for the hell of it (damn near literally) to go all out and experience maximum heat by riding out there from here on my motorcycle AND wearing shorts (the only time I ever wore shorts while riding a motor cycle). The heat coming off the engine was almost unbearable. I returned home by the mountain route up out of Palm Desert called Palms to Pines Highway. I stopped in the mountain town of Idyllwild to drink about a gallon of iced tea, and as I sat on the deck of the little cafe, the 90 degree heat there felt downright cool.

Here in central Illinois we're under a winter storm warning. Supposed to have a high temperature Monday of -6 degrees Fahrenheit. They're saying coldest temperatures in the last 20 years. Oh yeah and may get 8 inches(20 cm?) of snow by midnight Monday.

Strange Centigrade/Fahrenheit fact:

In the UK, we tend to use Fahrenheit for warm summer temperatures and Centigrade for cold weather I suppose the higher Fahrenheit numbers make it seem warmer than it is and having the freezing point at zero in Centigrade makes sense.

30 below right now. It's so cold can't turn off the hot water heat to the darkroom or the pipes will freeze where they pass through the garage, so being upstairs with one small window and plenty of snow insulating the roof my darkroom is the warmest room in the house right now. Guess I know what I'll be doing today.

We are supposed to get -22*F (-30*C) temp this evening in Minnesota, with wind chills down to -50*F (-44*C) possible. Tomorrow even colder.

I've been spoiled having spent the last two weeks in Southern Sweden, Denmark, and Northern Germany, with weather continuously in the 40*F (about 5*C to 10*C) range. There was rain and wind as the worst elements.

It's all screwy. It was -40F/C, tomorrow it is supposed to be +6C, then the temperature dives again. I hope I don't get skin reticulation.

The world must be upside down. Normally, this time of year where I live (Helsinki) we have -15C and a meter of snow and ice. Now it seems like our normal winter weather is in the US and we enjoy a mild +5C day after day.
