It does happen, but it happens because people who have money and generosity and who value such things make it happen.Do you know of any such instances, Matt and if so do they happen often enough to make this a less rare occurrence than get the ball on the wheel into the green slot at Las Vegas 5 times in a row
The only real likelihood of the great violin happening as described above occurring, as I see it, is on a pre-war film set with Jimmy Stewart and despite the 70F temperature in downtown L.A. snow is falling and there is a faint sound of reindeer bells. Does Pottersville change back to Bedford Falls at the same time?

Not sure what point you are making here? Are maybe you are not making a point but simply asking what the odds might be that someone who is currently a member of Photrio will sell you a Leica for $10? It wasn't clear to me what terms you are expecting to be attached to this transaction for $10Never..., Ever..., tell me the 'odds'.
I am looking for a tool, plain and simple, that I have a working knowledge of, that best suits my needs for a daily carry, AND encourages more photographs just by being small, easy to carry all day,or with a medium format kit, and has the quality to withstand rough handling, because, lets face it, some people, like myself, do no want or need the newest, best preserved, or collectable tools, because they are 'Too Nice' to carry or use'.
I hope Brad gets his Corvette, too. I’m not willing to pass mine along yet. So sorry.
Examples: https://www.beares.com/beares-international-violin-society/This is why great violins find their way to talented but impecunious young violinists.
But whereas great violins do make a difference, Leicas don't necessarily do the same.
Want something expensive? feel you cannot afford it? Here's how I got enough money to buy a Leica:
I worked at a job that paid me a wage. I saved a small portion out of every paycheck for over a year. Had it auto deposited - directly to a special savings account. I sold some of my other gear on eBay and added those proceed to that special savings account...After a while, I had enough money in that account to buy a Leica. So I bought one....but, I kept the auto deposits going to that special savings account so, that when the time comes, I can afford something else too.
I recommend this approach to anybody who wants something that they think they cannot afford. It is very satisfying.
@eli griggs the two questions you haven't really answered, but which any funding body doling out the sort of effective sum you are looking for in kind will always ask: what is it about your practice that needs/ will be improved by a Leica or similar RF; and why do you need this piece of equipment right now? Essentially: do you need this specific camera to make work, or are you wanting this camera as some sort of apparent signifier of status?
Deals happen! I was once gifted a battered but serviceable Leica 3C + 50 Elmar by an older gentleman who knew exactly what it was and it's likely market value, but I think he simply enjoyed the act of giving more than he would have enjoyed shipping it off and eventually receiving a check for a couple of hundred dollars that he didn't need. More recently, I got a stunning deal on a Nikon SP from a stranger who certainly knew it's market value as he is a collector, but camera had an issue which he simply didn't wish to be bothered with.
Let's also not forget that people die every day, and sometimes they leave behind an overwhelming amount of "stuff" which needs to be cleared out in a hurry, and a Leica or two may not be one of the bigger fish.
This post reminds me of a time I was at a short order restaurant and this guy came in begging for food. The owner fixed him a couple of scrambled eggs and toast, he turned up his nose saying he really wanted a ham and cheese omelet with hash browns and grilled onions. The owner took the plate, threw the food in the trash and threw him out of his restaurant. If that guy was really hungry and had no money, he would have eated what was put in front of him. If this poster really wanted to just create some great photography, he would use whatever he could find. A Leica is not required.
I'm pretty sure I was clear earlier in this thread, on my reason why I am looking specifically for a Leica, but it boils down that this is a tool I want to be an everyday carry, no prestige, just a working body.that would be used to fit my needs in a carry camera, that is intrusive in a pocket, which a Canon F1 or Nikon f2sb, or any of my 'old school' metal bodies would no do.
I hope Eli gets his Leica.
I hope Brad gets his Corvette, too. I’m not willing to pass mine along yet. So sorry.
