Do you know of any such instances, Matt and if so do they happen often enough to make this a less rare occurrence than get the ball on the wheel into the green slot at Las Vegas 5 times in a row :D

The only real likelihood of the great violin happening as described above occurring, as I see it, is on a pre-war film set with Jimmy Stewart and despite the 70F temperature in downtown L.A. snow is falling and there is a faint sound of reindeer bells. Does Pottersville change back to Bedford Falls at the same time? :D

It does happen, but it happens because people who have money and generosity and who value such things make it happen.
And because the recipients (generally) appreciate the gift, and intend to pass it forward.

Matt, I am sure you are right but I suspect that in terms of frequency of occurrence the instances tend to be the exception that proves the rule. I also imagine that in keeping with the kind of situation in which such things happen there is usually either a long term relationship between the parties or the giving party "believes" in the receiving party. It is not a relationship that is likely to be formed on an internet forum.

I was trying to assess the likelihood of the OP achieving his goal and putting forward what I thought to be major difficulties. Of course you never know in the same way that DT might be able to protect himself with what sounds like a malaria medicine. It's just that the odds are not in his or the OP's favour as I see it :D

If the OP wants someone to "gift" him a rangefinder for personal use (RE: "gift", lets face it, for ten bucks, he's basically asking for a free camera), why ask for a Leica, one of THE most highly valued 35mm rangefinders ever made??! Why not just ask for a nice Retina IIa (or similar), which he's much more likely to get for the asking than a Leica? Why does it have to be a "prestige" camera?
A person whose goal it is to own a prestige camera is someone motivated not so much by the desire to take good photographs as by the desire to own an elite instrument.

Never..., Ever..., tell me the 'odds'.
Not sure what point you are making here? Are maybe you are not making a point but simply asking what the odds might be that someone who is currently a member of Photrio will sell you a Leica for $10? It wasn't clear to me what terms you are expecting to be attached to this transaction for $10

Thanks

No to get into an argument, your opinion is your own, but "prestige" has nothing to do with my Ask.

I am looking for a tool, plain and simple, that I have a working knowledge of, that best suits my needs for a daily carry, AND encourages more photographs just by being small, easy to carry all day,or with a medium format kit, and has the quality to withstand rough handling, because, lets face it, some people, like myself, do no want or need the newest, best preserved, or collectable tools, because they are 'Too Nice' to carry or use'.

A working beater, of either series will suite me well, it simply needs to be usable in it intended form/handling and though old Leica glass, LTM, works on both, I can even use my FSU lenses and whatever else I can find for that 39mm mount, in the case that no lens is offered, even using them with an adapter in the case of a 'M body.

I do no expect people whom can no understand and 'Ask' like mine, they do no approve nor understand, and that is no fault of theirs, but there are those whom do know what I'm talking about, and it is, hopefully, one of them that may respond.

So, once again, I will happily use a camera or other kit found this way, because its what I'm looking for, for my bag.

Be Well, Be Safe, and Godspeed to you and yours.

There is no point being made, using this oft quoted line, just an lame attempt at some humor, which most people this long in the Isolation, might appreciate.

Cheers.

Thanks I have read your quote again and I understand it now. If you considered the odds against this request
or a lot of other things happening then you would never do a lot of things that defy the odds.

Want something expensive? feel you cannot afford it? Here's how I got enough money to buy a Leica:
I worked at a job that paid me a wage. I saved a small portion out of every paycheck for over a year. Had it auto deposited - directly to a special savings account. I sold some of my other gear on eBay and added those proceed to that special savings account...After a while, I had enough money in that account to buy a Leica. So I bought one....but, I kept the auto deposits going to that special savings account so, that when the time comes, I can afford something else too.

I recommend this approach to anybody who wants something that they think they cannot afford. It is very satisfying.

Sounds to me like you are describing any number of inexpensive rangefinders, give or take your "working knowledge of". A working Kodak Retina IIa (or IIIc) would be perfect for your needs, I would think, and very affordable!

@eli griggs the two questions you haven't really answered, but which any funding body doling out the sort of effective sum you are looking for in kind will always ask: what is it about your practice that needs/ will be improved by a Leica or similar RF; and why do you need this piece of equipment right now? Essentially: do you need this specific camera to make work, or are you wanting this camera as some sort of apparent signifier of status?

Thanks Matt and it is very laudable and makes sense as a means of furthering the art of violin playing but it would seem to describe a rather different situation that the one Eli finds himself to be in.

This too is my preferred way to get what I need, however, a regular or part time job is no possible for me.

I am an Enewetok Clean-up Vet, and my service on that extremely radioactive Atoll, when I was 20-21 y.o., pretty much killed my health by 1990, when I worked as a freelance photographer/assistant/b&w darkroom guy.

I ended up as the 'at home parent' to our two sons at about that time, and I worked as an election assistant to judge, in my local polling station which was only a couple of days, but that was it.

I also worked as an artist, first with wall space, then studio a couple decades later, years later, always with help from my family, or in really good months, my own earnings, then, 3.5 -4.5 years ago I lost my studio, due to budgeting by my Roseann and I, when it just became too much to handle.

My work sold well, but it was mostly in the days the studios were open to the public, on the third Friday of the month. and for the last year or so, I mainly was working on an abstract series on heavy Arche's W.C. Paper, with small drawings, silver point, paintings in W.C., acrylic and oils and coloured pencils as well as ink drawings with old fountain pens, etc. I had a good following of regular and new patrons, but the constant fatigue, and a number of other conic conditions limited my work to when I had 'enough energy'.

My intention in working on the series on Arche's was to make 100 pieces of half and full sheets for a show, so I did no sell these, as I put a lot of effort in getting these together and intend to keep working on the series, once I am able to have space to paint.

My pottery also sold well, but without a wheel and kiln, I could only sell off most of what I made in school, in the mid-nineties, in a couple of years or so. when my kids were old enough to attend all day school.

I have no been able to organize my 'home studio' well enough to allow printmaking and easel painting, but, my darkroom is up and running, and I still can get out for photography, though we have been isolating, however my car is down for awhile now and my Rozeann has a modest job as a cake decorator at a local supermarket chain, so much of the time, on her days off, we make local road trips in her van and she helps out as driver and assistant..

We do pretty good most of the time, and I'm happy and love my Rozeann and less am stressed than years ago, though I will always have my chronic depression, another gift of my service there, but under control for some time now..

The V.A. has mostly let the Enewetok Veterans die-off, as we were too small a demographic to have enough pull in D.C., but Kim Walh did the first of some major stories, about Enewetok, the internet allowed many of us to find each other and work together to support each other, and the last few years, it's story is getting a lot more attention.

The N.Y.Times did a big piece on us and the Governments deceptions, a few years back, just google, "Eniwetok Veterans, N.Y. Times'
and you can read some on the topic.

In the first of the year, after 40 plus years of denying we were even there, the V.A. slipped us onto the 'Atomic Vets list, overnight' but did no make any announcement about it, and many of use are now getting some more direct attention, though we have some way to go to get disability payments, as the VA is still the VA, but I like them well enough.

I do no draw any VA, or other payments, so I have manage within our resources, just as every other member of Photrio.com must, and I tried to sell some of my prints by other artist, to artist that were part of exchanges we had and newbees so I made the big Ask, for the Leica first on Greg's List, and later on camera forums I belong to,

I'm no poor mouthing, but you and others question why I posted this ad, so that's the basics of it.

Most of my kit was bought when I found really good bargains from individuals, when I was actively selling as an artist, and by scanning Craig's List and Freecycle, with occasional gifts from others.

What monies I do accumulate, go for small things, such as good used filters for my medium format kit, film, and chemistry with which I mix my own developers, etc.

Anyway, that's way too much information to put on the internet, but I have done similar, once before, so, there's little reason no to respond to your query, in this ad.

This is no a sob story for attention, just simply my situation, and I won't die or feel badly if I can no find what I'm looking for, but I do no mind asking as I have.

Cheers, Be Safe, Godspeed to all here.

I'm pretty sure I was clear earlier in this thread, on my reason why I am looking specifically for a Leica, but it boils down that this is a tool I want to be an everyday carry, no prestige, just a working body.that would be used to fit my needs in a carry camera, that is intrusive in a pocket, which a Canon F1 or Nikon f2sb, or any of my 'old school' metal bodies would no do.

A camera that fits and feels like an extension of your mind's eye, is a great thing in a working tool and means, in many cases, that it will be used all the more frequently, than a larger camera that is in it's self more demanding in transporting, lens assortment, etc.

Used more equates in more photographs made.

Last, about the timing, I'm 62, and do no reasonably expect I will earn enough to buy my own, before my income is augmented by something more than what it is now.

Cheers.

Deals happen! I was once gifted a battered but serviceable Leica 3C + 50 Elmar by an older gentleman who knew exactly what it was and it's likely market value, but I think he simply enjoyed the act of giving more than he would have enjoyed shipping it off and eventually receiving a check for a couple of hundred dollars that he didn't need. More recently, I got a stunning deal on a Nikon SP from a stranger who certainly knew it's market value as he is a collector, but camera had an issue which he simply didn't wish to be bothered with.

Let's also not forget that people die every day, and sometimes they leave behind an overwhelming amount of "stuff" which needs to be cleared out in a hurry, and a Leica or two may not be one of the bigger fish.

I was gifted a clean Leica IIf red dial with a 50mm Elmar by a good friend whose father died and she wanted it to get a good home. So this was a free Leica, but it had a curtain issue and needed to be CLA'd. Even using Youxin, the service was $150 plus shipping to make it a usable camera. And while it's posible I would give a good friend who showed an interest in film one of my cameras, I'm not gonna ship a Leica to a total stranger for $10 on the promise he's not gonna just turn around and sell it on ebay.

This post reminds me of a time I was at a short order restaurant and this guy came in begging for food. The owner fixed him a couple of scrambled eggs and toast, he turned up his nose saying he really wanted a ham and cheese omelet with hash browns and grilled onions. The owner took the plate, threw the food in the trash and threw him out of his restaurant. If that guy was really hungry and had no money, he would have eated what was put in front of him. If this poster really wanted to just create some great photography, he would use whatever he could find. A Leica is not required.

@StepheKoontz He's already turned his nose up at a Zorki. At this point, I just check back on this thread to see where it goes.

Something similar happened to me last December. Homeless guy outside a supermarket asks for lunch, I say ok and go in to buy him a sandwich. I order a roast beef sandwich for him and he tells me he wants the tri tip (steak) sandwich!
He got the roast beef...

Probably should have asked him what kind of sandwich (or breakfast) he preferred.
Years ago I was sitting in a car with a buddy at Tommy's when an old guy approached asking for money to get a burger.
To my friend's consternation, I gave the guy a couple bucks.
Old guy came out smiling and waving his double cheeseburger, he was so happy.
"There but for the grace of God, go I"

In another thread where someone was looking for a LTM 50mm lens, the OP suggested that an Industar 61, a Soviet lens made for the Fed and Zorki cameras, was an excellent lens. That means he has one or did in the past and thought well of it. He has the tools he needs.

WTB: 50mm for LTM

So if I were to offer you a recently serviced and fully restored Kodak Retina IIa for $10., you would decline the offer? If so, explain to me why it doesn't meet the requirements stated above. Seems to me it'd be just about perfect as a "no prestige, just a working body" camera.
