Just one thing, aren't they polarising filters ?

Use 2 linear polarising filters and you can do the same thing, but you might not want the polarising effect.

Yeah, that's what it looks like to me. You might also not want to add four air-glass surfaces in front of your lens. You could carry two ND filters to cover a lot of situations.

That's what I thought. I think this line from the web page confirms it: The Vari-ND can be used with most other Singh-Ray filters except Polarizers

I remember doing this at school with two sheets of polariser. Add overlapping strips of clear sticky tape to create interesting colour effects.
