Hello,

I'm new in using Shenhao 5x7. I would like your recommendations on what lens should I get for me to achieve a wider coverage for my landscape photography? Please give me the brand and focal length that would be equivalent to at least 24mm for 35mm cameras.

Thank you.

Schneider 72mm SAXL is the widest lens that is stated as covering 5x7". You'll probably need the CF to go with it, especially if you're shoot transparencies.

The 72 SA XL is very expensive and barely covers 5x7, and 72 is really extreme on 5x7 - corresponds roughly to 15mm on 35mm. A 115 will more or less match a 24 on 35mm. There is a 115 (Rodenstock Grandagon / Caltar II-N) which will cover 5x7 with ample movement and should cost half or less what a 72 SA XL would be. The 120 Super Angulon and Nikkor SW are two other excellent modern lenses that should be much cheaper than the 72 and would also provide a nicely wide view with ample room for movement on 5x7.

PS - A 72 SA XL may require a recessed lensboard for your Shen Hao, and you may run into trouble keeping the camera's baseboard out of the picture.

On 5x7 the closest focal length lens to a 24mm on 135 format is 110-120mm. Is size and weight a concern? What about maximum aperture? Is cost important? How much excess coverage do you need for Scheimplug movements? Following is a list of the wide lenses I would choose if I could have anything I want... for landscape imagery.

72mm SAXL
110mm SSXL
150mm Apo Symmar or Apo Sironar

If 72mm is too wide for your shooting style then the 110mm SSXL is an excellent choice. If cost is an issue then the 115mm Grandagon/Caltar or 120mm SA Oren mentioned are excellent as is the 120mm Nikkor-SW.

EDIT: Oren mentioned construction of the Shen-Hao possibly limiting how wide a lens you can use. I'm not very familiar with your camera. Maybe he's right but I don't know.

IIRC, my Rodenstock Grandagon 90mm f6.8 covers 5x7 with limited movement. They're common and inexpensive, especially if you get the Calumet Caltar-labeled version.

Another, not so inexpensive, option is the Goerz American Optical W.A. Dagor 4 3/8" (110mm) f8. It's a bit dim for shooting in low light, but that thing can almost cover whole plate (6.5 x 8.5). I have one, and it's one that will leave my collection over my cold, dead body.

I've used a 90mm s/a on my 5x7, and the 3 1/2" wollensak exwa stopped all the way down
allegedly covers( illuminates?) 5x7 as well. no need for super expensive lenses. the exwa,
costs about 100$ and the chrome barreled sa costs a few hundred ... ... the recessed lensboard might cost more than a lens.
