So I have a Gitzo 1570M tripod head that I really like, but the horizontal pan/tilt is really getting on my nerves. It does not operate smoothly at all, it take a bit of force to get it moving and when it does it jerks. It's quite frustrating trying to get a level horizon when it's not smooth.. Does anyone have any tips on lubricating it, or breaking it in somehow- I've only had it for 6 weeks, but I assume the break in is about over.. Any ideas?

What camera are you using it with?

It's really made for large cameras or small cameras with long lenses, so the tension is set to account for the extra leverage. It does loosen up slightly over time, but not much. I'm not sure if there's a way of adjusting the tension.

darn.. I use it with a few camera, most only "kinda" heavy. Wehman 8x10 with 300mm lens. A rb67 with a 127mm lens.. I originally got it for my burke and james 8x10, which is much heavier than the other, but it still wasn't smooth in the least.. Hrm..

I would think it would work well with the B&J 8x10".

There is a silicon spray that puts tiny silicon balls with lubricant to solve such problems. When I get home, if I can remember I will find the product name and manufacturer. I have used it to stop exercise machines from squeaking.
