I used to use Microphen to push Tri-X but unfortunately that now costs $38 dollars per liter in Japan. Yes, 38! I’ve brought it up a few times here and wrote ILFORD about it. Must be a mistake when ID11 and the rest of their developers are more or less in line with prices outside of Japan. That’s that.
HC-110 was made “illegal” in Japan back in 2015. Used it before I used Microphen.... sad story. Let’s hope xtol stays in Japan.
Naysayers will tell you no, but experience says yes. People have had decent results pushing in 1+100 stand. And there is a noticeable difference between a 20 minute dev in 1+100 and a stand development of an hour, with agitation first full minute and for 30 secs at 30 mins. Probably not worth debating with folks, but I recommend giving it a shot. Diafine is now expensive to play with but again my results have been very good in it. I think you already know that shooting 1600 means losing shadows, so objections that neither of these will get your more shadow details are beside the point.
Well, use Xtol. If it’s too fine, use dilute Xtol, if you don’t like how it looks add a solvent to Rodinal. Or add some Rodinal to dilute Xtol. Or use T-Max 400 @ 1600 in Rodinal
Tri-X and a nice autumn sky with a flock of ducks flying across it ... Just tell folks there were a bunch of duck hunters down below, and what appears in the scene is all the shotgun shot in the air. The only problem with that, is that with TriX in certain developers, it looks more like buckshot than birdshot, esp when gross underexposure is offset by gross overdevelopment, which is the case in this thread.
