Also a technque used to re-plumb houses to avoid chopping up interior walls for access. Interestingly they often insulate the hot pipes, but forget to teach us warm weather folks the "leave a faucet dripping" trick.

I agree that's really strange, in New England, you aren't even allowed to install water pipes on the INSIDE walls that touch the outer most wall, you have to have them sent through a central location on an interior wall, or they could crack from the cold if the house temp drops too much (like when you set the thermostat to 55 when you're not home)...

I was in Iceland in July 2001. It must have been about 50 degrees out and kids were running around in shorts and t-shirts.
Then I see online weather reports from California with news reporters wearing coats, scarves, and hats when it drops below 50.
Are you guys a little weak out there in Southern California? Or, more than a little, perhaps? Doesn't that bother you?

New a fellow who was stationed at Camp Penelton a marine base just south of San Clement along the coast in So. Cal during the winter for basic training. He was from one of the mid west states,said he use to ware a tee shirt while working out side when it was snowing and it did not bother him at all. In boot camp he complained about having a cold the whole winter he was there probable form the moist cold air coming in off the ocean that just sucks the heat right out of your body, always damp and never really dry in those barracks.

The colds he had was more likely due to being thrown into contact with people with new germs he had never been exposed to before -- no immunity built up -- and the stress that his body was being put through. When the boys and I go down to San Clemente for Thanksgiving every year, we are the few that are on the beach and in the water. Water temp is in the balmy low 60'sF and the air temps nice and warn -- 60's to 70F. Ocean water up here rarely gets above the low 50's. -- and 60's for the air temps! And that is in the summer!

In the mid-80's I worked as a civilian contractor on the airfield of a Navy test facility that happens to be located in the Mojave desert.
The airfield is 5 or so miles from the main part of the base, and one spring afternoon I was heading out for late lunch or some such; temp was maybe 85 (F) or so.
There was a sailor waiting at the shuttle bus stop, so I offered him a ride into the base.
He gets in the car and says "Sure is hot isn't it?"
I said, "you haven't been here very long have you?"
"No sir, I just got here last month.", he says.


Ok, well that explains it. (in local-speak, "hot" when talking about weather is maybe 110+ (43C))
I broke the news to him as gently as I could.

When there is a winter cold snap in Los Angeles it is really pretty ugly. The temperature does not get above 72°F until after 10 AM and we have to wear sweaters, can you imagine that in January and February! Then when it warms up later in the day, people take off their sweaters and drop them anywhere. They are so unused to having sweaters that they forget to take them home. The sweaters just pile up. In my girlfriend's school, as the principal she keeps asking the parents and the children to take the sweaters home, but they never claim them. Already this year she has one classroom piled high with sweaters. The room is so stuffed with sweaters that the fire marshal told her that after New Years she has to get rid of all the sweaters or the school will be cited for fire safety violations.

Yes it is warm here in Fresno/Clovis CA
This photo was taken a few years ago.
In Fresno county last week is down in the teen's next week in the 70's
I can only hope for global warming some day it will take the chill off

Today was so warm that, with the help of a hair dryer, I was able to thaw out the frozen choke and throttle and lift mechanisms on my plow tractor for the first time in over a week. Oh, and it's warm enough to start snowing again. Happy day.

Right now, 7:30PM, it's 55 degress F. Perfect for the Christmas parade tonight! It's a big one, about 120 entries, and will run over 2 1/2 hours, so it's nice that folks will not get too chilly. Yes you are right Vaughn about the germs being spread, my wife is a high school teacher and colds, flu are spread easily throw the class room. You would think students that age would use hankies or hold there hand to there mouth when sneezing.

My triplets in three different school classes, their mom working full time in a hospital, and me at the university. It was amazing that we were usually healthy!

But then one of the triplets would disappear under a counter, table, or whatever as soon as my back was turned -- and show up chewing gum. He built up a great immune system! But we did start buying him gum instead!!

Between all of you, you were in contact with enough variety, you probably developed antibodies pretty quickly to each others and your own. If you weren't overboard with cleaning stuff when they were young, their immune systems probably developed a decent ability to react properly.
My mom was the substitute school nurse while my brother and I were in school and she got sick the first year, but never after that.

It got above freezing here the other day - I thought it was summer! didn't zip the jacket, didn't wear gloves, it was great! It's back in the teens, but that's not too bad. It's only when it's windy that I can't deal - it does seem to be windier here, too. 'Course, the house is on the top of a hill, too. Wind has always bothered my lungs - I used to gasp and gulp when wind hit my face. I don't as much now, but it still bothers me.
