Well, I finally did what I've been threatening to do for the last two years: I quit my day job. I'm now devoting the majority of my working hours to the success of my current gallery and to opening the next one in Perth (Australia) by September.

That's not to say I've given up my career in professional geology all-together, but I'll be relying on it much less than I was yesterday. However, now I've got the freedom and time to make my passion for photography into my new career. It's a scary thought, but also very exciting.

How do you jump for joy and tremble in trepidation at the same time?

Cheers,
Graeme

Thanks very much for the wishes. I know it's going to take much more hard work than good luck to become successful, but I'm ready to give it a try.

Thanks,
Graeme

I wonder how many of us are out here? I guess it is a stretch to call me any kind of geologist, but it was my college major oh so many years ago. :D

Oh, and good luck Graeme!

Well Paul,

I did receive Grad degrees in both Geology and in Zoology/Ecology. I did work as a geologist as an environmental consultant for 8 years. I have been out of the field for the last 10 years (as a photographer) but still maintain my PG license (but boy and I rusty).

Seconded. Here's wishing you plenty of glory to go with 'em!

Every success, Graeme.

Congrats!

And you have the added advantage in that on those days where being your own boss makes you want to hit your head against a rock, you'll even know what kind of rock it is!

A big congrats Graeme! It is a bit terrifying at first but well worth it. Some of the phrases you may hear over the next few months: "gosh you look completely different now, like a dark cloud is no longer hanging over you" or "well, I must say you seem miles better now", and my wife said, "I've got my Sean back". It's easy to get stuck into something for years and become so busy and emotionally unavailble to all around you that it destroys who you are as a person. Best of luck!

Another former geologist here as well. Degree in geology and then 4 years working as a geophysicist in the oil industry. Stopped in 1989 though!

Best of luck Graeme -- hope it goes well. Scary!!

Cheers

Best of luck Graeme!

Like that Elvis song "You've gotta follow that dream, wherever that dream may lead"

Go get 'em Graeme! I dropped the "day job" 18 years ago and haven't looked back since. It won't be easy, but you'll feel a whole lot more alive.

All the Best,

Bill
