Because if people know they are being photographed they often behave very differently which changes the photographs you are trying to take.

But quite often they are not conscious of that fact, if at all until after you have pressed the shutter.

I took a Mamiya C330 to Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood to do some street photography. Every where I went people were asking me to take photographs. So much for stealthy photographs.

I was using a C330 on a tripod along a street once and someone thought I was checking for speeders.

Hmm. I wonder whether my ETRSi on a tripod, with the 220mm zoom lens looks like field artillery... :D

I tend to joke with people that my RB with the 180 is a nice "little" camera.

Took my Mamiya C220 to St Augustine Labor Day weekend, which coincided with the city's 450th birthday. I was approached countless times by all sorts of folks who thought that it was 'way cool' that I was using such an awesome camera. One woman actually identified it as a Mamiya, but she also confessed her husband has one, and that's how she knew.

Between the camera and the puppy my wife and daughter were walking, we must have been stopped close to 100 times.
