Either the author's previous book was a bestseller, or it's a "hot" topic, a celebrity, or the publisher's sales rep convinced them it'll sell, with the help of coop allowances (payola).

Otherwise they order what they think they'll sell according to history and category, like any other bookstore.

Yep, that's it exactly. Publishers advance some of these authors millions of dollars for books that they have not yet written, sometimes many books in advance resulting in a huge liability if they fizzle out rather than strike gold. These are the writers who's work the publishers push hard to the vendors like Barnes and Noble and Amazon to buy large quantities expecting repeat NYT ratings, although it doesn't necessarily work out that way. Still, these are the books that get bought in bulk up front, while everyone else gets the toe-in-the-water test first.

I received my copy yesterday. I ordered directly from the publisher. It's well worth the money; I am very pleased.

Hmm, I wonder if I should have ordered directly from the publisher... It's the second time Amazon delays, and then "confirms" a shipping date. We'll see.

Amazon is currently expecting new orders to arrive at customer residences in 2-3 weeks.

No spoilers please.

And after posting this last note, got an email saying mine had shipped and would arrive in 6 days or fewer, not with the projected 2-3 week delay.

Mine arrived yesterday, it is a hefty tome! It feels good to have a good, thick new darkroom book.

I'd post some criticisms, but Lee said No Spoilers...

I would like to share the text of an e-mail I just received from the publisher of the Darkroom Cookbook, Focal Press. When a book on silver-based processing does well it is a success for all of us.

"Regarding sales, so far the book is off to a great start! We’ve moved 1355 copies out of the warehouse, and have sent out 165 samples (to schools, places for reviews, etc.) so that is really good. Also, check this out - “darkroom and cookbook” was the most searched-for term on our website last month! Yes, even more than “Photoshop". How cool is that?"

Congratulations Steve. I too have my copy, purchased from an indie bookseller.
I did my part with Focal's website searches too

Not only that, it's a great book, I enjoyed reading it, and I will find it useful.
Thanks for writing it.
