Thank you for checking it out and reporting back. The way I found it was to type in www.focalpress.com and in their search box I typed in The Darkroom Cookbook and it took me right to the 3rd edition. Give that a try, Lee.
Get yet another page with that link, another endless loop unless cookies are enabled, telling me to click on a choice between N. America or outside N. America, again and again and again....

It doesn't bother me. I know how to get around it, but others with cookies disabled may not understand what's going on. That's the reason I reported the problem. Some internet businesses shoot themselves in the foot like this on a regular basis, demanding cookies, using MS IE proprietary code, etc, not understanding that they're turning away customers. Just thought you might like to know.

I already have the Film Developing Cookbook, Darkroom Cookbook, and VC Printing Manual, and refer to them on a regular basis. I'll be getting the revised Darkroom Cookbook as well, since you seem to have included a lot of new material of interest to me.

Lee's hit an area in website design that is often overlooked. It's even worse with all those free photo website templates out there that have embedded click through ads and the like.

For those with cookie problems, it's actually quicker (less clicks) if people went to http://www.elsevierdirect.com and ordered it from there. The sequence of website redirections goes like this: FocalPress.com --> FocalBookstore.com --> ElsevierDirect.com. Each site requiring a cookie to move it to the next site in the flow. One can see how this would confuse the heck out of a net novice.

Anyway, back to the book, I pre-ordered one too.

Regards, Art.

Umm... what was the mistake about sodium hydroxide? I have the second edition from Kinokuniya bookshop in Sydney with no errata slip. I guess that there is still a responsiblity for that edition. I don't use sodium hydroxide currently and I note Steve's cautions, but is there more to be aware of?

Thanks - Ross

If a title/subject does well in the first two weeks (which includes the pre-sale figures) the publisher - and competing publishers - are more likely to publish additional books by the same author OR by other authors on the same subject.

Then things have changed a bit since I worked in-house, which was pre-Bookscan, and it could be months before we had any idea how well a book had sold, pre-sales were usually not very significant for most books, and the sales guys only cared about final sales for comps.

Bear in mind that since 1994 when it was first published the DCB has sold approximately 12,000 copies, total.

A successful digital book does that in one year and some as much as 50,000+. We need to rally behind this book in order to let the industry know that we're still here.

That doesn't really sound too bad for a highly specialized book from a small publisher (though now the small appendage of a big publisher). How much does a book like The Negative by Adams sell? I just bought for myself a copy of the new edition of Light: Science & Magic, and I note the book description on Amazon says, "previous edition sold 20K units!" I mean, I hope your book does well and stays in print, because, unlike most photo how-to books, it's actually useful.

See attached. I keep it taped to the title page of the book.

Pre-ordered through Focal Press directly, via the supplied link.

And thanks, Steve. I'm not an artist. Not famous. Not wealthy. Not out to conquer the photographic world. I just enjoy this particular avocation immensely. And your suite of books - along with Ansel's - has contributed hugely to that enjoyment. My compliments to everyone previously mentioned who has had a hand in bringing this edition to press, and thus to me personally. These are damn useful books. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the errata note David, I suspected that it was something like that, similar to the usual rule about not adding water to many acids.

I got an e-mail from Amazon saying the release date has been pushed back about a month. I guess we'll just have to slog along with our tired old formulas for a few more weeks. Just mixed up a batch of Dassonville D-3 to try out this evening.

I got the same delay notice. Maybe they had to print more than they expected...

By default, Amazon only buys 5-10 copies of any given new title (unless it is a NY Times best seller), then if it sells they order more. It is likely that they ran out of the original order, not expecting the demand, and are awaiting the next shipment.

But how do they know it is a NY times best seller or not before it goes on sale?

All of the pre-sales here are well in advance enough that they should know what to order.

Either the author's previous book was a bestseller, or it's a "hot" topic, a celebrity, or the publisher's sales rep convinced them it'll sell, with the help of coop allowances (payola).

Otherwise they order what they think they'll sell according to history and category, like any other bookstore.

Interestingly Amazon emailed me automatically suggesting I might like to buy the book, based on my previous purchases etc. So far all the books they've recommended have been quite appropriate, often I've already got a copy or it's a book I'd consider buying.

I'm sure Steve said somewhere the book is due out around the first two weeks in October.
