Anybody has Larry Sultan's Pictures from Home? Mack has a new printing out, and I'm really tempted.

For anyone considering a purchase of Robert Adams' American Silence, a complete flip-through was just published on YouTube yesterday.

You could make a handmade book, a piece of art in itself, and the photos will look better than what you’d probably get from Blurb et al.

Do you mean make a book out of original prints? I've always wondered if there's a way to make a book out of original (not scanned) darkroom prints. Do you know any sources for doing that?

Thanks,
Dale
This book from Craig Huber's Veritas Editions is done like that, but at an edition size of 15 it is/was priced for a market that is a different one than has been discussed in this thread:

I've had the privilege of looking through and holding one copy. Craig made sure we wore clean white gloves first
I believe that this was the book or one of the books that was purchased by the Vatican for its library.
Craig's platinum palladium prints are wonderful!

Years ago everyone had photo albums. You remember the type with those little black corner stickums to hold the photos on the black art paper pages, always falling off. There's nothing stopping people from using those today although the technology is better.

I used the ones with wax as an adhesive and the plastic cover for each page to that I did not have for fiddle with the black corners.

I have a stack that have built-in dry-mount tissue, so you can arrange photos in the frames (cut into the pages) then stick a page at a time in a heat press. I haven't used them.....

My cousin gave me her photo album after my wife volunteered me to create a DVD digital slide show. They were of her parents during WWII. Unfortunately, most of the pictures were stuck to the protective plastic cover sheets and would rip when I tried to get them separated, so I could scan them. I had to scan through the plastic which created some issues. But the overall project was a great success, and my cousin loved the DVD. I added some Big Band background music to the DVD from Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey to add flavor to the show and fit the time period. Lots of fun doing.

Never thought of doing a Blurb book which actually would be easy to put together since I already have the scans. Shhh. Don't tell my wife.

I know it's easy for threads to veer off in a variety of directions, but I was hoping we could keep this one on the subject of published photobooks - either by traditional publishers (Steidl, Aperture, etc.) or published through an on-demand print service like Blurb.

I'm personally interested in the subject of book making (papers, bindings, handmade books, etc.), and think it would be great if someone started a thread on that subject so the discussion in this thread could stay true to its original topic.

International Center for Photography NYC ICP is always a good source for photobooks. I've wondered around their place like a candy store and they're loaded with selections. You can also check out the reference lists here.

I don't own it, but it's on my list. There's an overview of the book here that you might find interesting:

A great favorite, but now hard to find: VII photographer Daniel Schwarz's "Traveling Through the Eye of History" -- you can find snaps from it online but the book is where it's at, the layout and structure are innovative and constitute the Real Meat of it, making it far more than just pix of random faraway peoples.

I also got a copy of Avedon's "Made in France" recently, quite lovely in its printing and conceit: each original-sized page, when turned, reveals the printer's notes on the back.

Kinda pricey for my book budget.

I paid $17 for Traveling Through the Eye of History -- in fact I got two copies! Have one in mind as a gift to a specific photographer friend. Our library also has one.

The Avedon has a connection to Publish Your Photography Book cited above btw -- both were made by teams including Darius Hines who once worked at Fraenkel Gallery.

SF Art Book Fair was a couple of weeks ago, I got some big Candida Hofer books for $5 and also a copy of Gabriela Hasbun's The New Black West. Here is a pic of some fairgoers.

I'd love a copy of Telex Iran, but it too is eye-wateringly expensive.

Find a good library. SF Public Library, oversized, third floor. A few universities nearby too.

As for Whatever You Say Say Nothing, the biggest challenge might be the shelf space!

I was recently introduced to Fan Ho. It appears that any of those books are really going to cost me.

Themes+Projects were Fan Ho's agent in the US (he lived in California in later years) and they have some unsold printer's seconds of The Living Theatre here.

@bjorke Thank you for that link. I ordered 2 of the trilogy titles in "B" condition. I agree regarding shelf space. Congrats on the acquisition.
