Out of curiosity, has anyone sold/bought photobooks via the Classified forum? I taught photography for 30+ years and need to downsize my collection.

I follow Steidl on Instagram. They currently have an artist takeover by Joshua Chuang, collaborator on many recent Robert Adams books.

Much to my surprise and joy, I learned that a new revised version of "Summer Nights, Walking" has been published. https://steidl.de/Books/Summer-Nights-Walking-0109232837.html

Joshua writes a little about the background over a number of posts on instagram.
Recommendable reading if you are interested in Adams.

Summer Nights... is a popular Robert Adams book, and has sold out fast in previous incarnations.
I don't own any of them so I ordered directly from Steidl without hesitation yesterday, and they shipped with DHL today.
One can hope Steidl prints a large edition, but I didn't want to take any chances.

I've been enjoying Joshua Chuang's takeover of the Steidl Instagram account as well. I'd love to see a longer-form video of some of the behind-the-scenes footage he's been showing.

I own original copies of Summer Nights and Summer Nights, Walking so I'll likely skip the Steidl reissue, although as a huge Adams fan I have to say I'm still tempted 🙂

No, "bleed" or "full bleed" is where the image extends right to the edge of the page, with no border.

Generally I don't like it, but it's not nearly as bad as when an image is printed across the gutter.

Blurb has what they call Layflat books. That might help with pictures that extend across both pages. Has anyone used one of these?

That's nice, but I think this thread is about buying and collecting books on the photography of others, not self-publishing.

Ok. Good point. So let me add this. Blurb sells books as well that are self-published. If you look through their selection, you'll find some very interesting photo books from amateurs that you can buy. Some are excellent. What's also nice about it is it can give you some ideas for your own work just as photo books can from well-established photographers. You can also browse through the books on-line to see the pictures.

Just ordered a copy of William Klein: Yes, the catalog for the 2022 Klein retrospective that took place at ICP. It's on sale this month for a pretty good price at Baltimore Photo Space (no affiliation, just a customer) for $66. Regular price is $95. Amazon has it for slightly less but it's a BIG book and, given my experience, if I bought from them it would likely be DOA (Damaged on Arrival 😋). Will post some thoughts when it arrives.

I'm going to be contrarian for a moment. I don't think we can compare Blurb products to hardly anything else discussed thus far in this thread. They are not meant to compete with the bigger,(insert preferred adjective here) "nicer" art/photography book publishers. They are a path to self-publishing without taking out a second mortgage. One can get a pretty decent product through them, but it will take ordering a sample or two.

I will also add a favorable review for an ebay seller who also has a brick & mortar location. Vincent Borrelli. My book from him/them via ebay came almost as well packaged as my last new purchase through Nazraeli direct.

Let me add to that: most photographers I know are lousy editors on their own. A good photo book is a collaboration between the photographer (and not always, like if they're deceased), an editor and a designer. Very few photographers are good at all three skills and self-published books can be disappointing because of that. It used to be called "vanity press," for a good reason.

And although I have not used Blurb in recent years, my experience with them in the past has been the quality runs the gamut from OK to poor. They have several facilities and the output may be depedent on which one is (digitally) printing the book. A well-printed book requires a lot of pre-press expertise and effort, something most Blurb clients lack. For short-run books--not one-offs--I prefer Bookmobile, who at least sends proofs for approval before the press run. But real printing is a different story and quite expensive for the good stuff.

Vincent Borelli is top-notch, I've purchased several books from him/them and have never had an issue.

Of course, Blurb isn't as good as professional photo book publishers. But where else can you publish a book for $50 each in small quantities of even only one? It gives everyone a chance to get their work in book form for your coffee table. Or maybe to be given as a gift to friends and relatives. That's better than filing your project's photos in an acid proof box and left to rot in the attic.

You could make a handmade book, a piece of art in itself, and the photos will look better than what you’d probably get from Blurb et al.

That's a great way of doing it too. And very personal as well. Blurb's a cheap and easy option not available in the past.

I think Blurb and its direct competitors are a great way to simply get 1 or 2 copies of a thing into the artists hands to get an idea of how things look in print. Maybe square format book isn't best for your work? You only spent $20 to find that out.

If anyone is still thinking in terms of photographic projects, you could also print up a field guide relating to your project quite economically and show or give one to your potential subjects or maybe someone who would be in charge of access. Let them actually "see" what you have in mind rather than try and explain it. Icebreaker.

Alec Soth has a pretty good video highlighting the journey he took towards "Sleeping by the Mississippi." He seems to look back on his maquette with both fondness and disdain.

Alec Soth also introduced me to Gilles Peress. "Whatever You say, Say Nothing" is trying to get onto my bookshelf. That price tag though, Oof!

Do you mean make a book out of original prints? I've always wondered if there's a way to make a book out of original (not scanned) darkroom prints. Do you know any sources for doing that?

Thanks,
Dale

Glue the prints into a blank book. Rip every second page out of a coil-bound book of sketch paper and dry mount a photo on every remaining sheet. If truly ambitious and wanted text, get a Print-on-Demand (e.g., Blurb) book printed with text and blank pages for you to glue a print.

A stack of photo paper would be difficult to glue-bind, unless it was light-weight paper (which you can't get, anymore).

Speaking of glue binding, I bought a photo book a week ago (a used one, photos of dancers by Toronto photographers (a couple of exceptions) called Photographs Dance). It's a softcover and had a broken spine (just the glue) and several pages falling out. I put the pages back in, tight against the spine, then I ironed the glued edge of the book while keeping the edge pressed tight. That melted the glue and fixed the spine. I've done it on a few books. If you iron too long or too hot, the glue will start to seep between the pages, though.
