All I require is any set of wheels that will get me and my backpack to the trailhead.

I do a lot of road trips with my LF gear, even driving from Connecticut to North Dakota, then north wi Winnipeg andthe back east thru Niagra Falls to Connecticut camping along the way. I did all this in a Jeep Wrangler. I have owned several models and now I have a Rubicon. This has proven to be a great vehicle for these types of trips, but I've always been on my own. Now, I bought a used Jeep Cherokee 4.0L and this is really working out well. I can carry all my gear, golf clubs and other stuff for 2 two. If I need to, I can sleep over night in the back.

My dream is that when I retire I will buy a 29 foot Class C motorhome and tour the U.S. I will get a model that I can darken a room for developing and contact printing.
I will tow a Jeep behind for local transportation.

Not sure you can even get a Defender in the US.
There is a dealership selling them here in the bay area of California. I know they use to sell them in Santa Fe New Mexioco in the late 80's.

The dealersip is located on Broadway in Oakland.

... and a Defender will return 29 miles per gallon (average urban/extra-urban) from its 122bhp 2.5L diesel. A diesel won't let you down in any weather... a petrol engine (thats gas to you US-ians!) will die in floods etc. unless it is specially equipped. Also it doesn't matter where you are in the world you will find someone who can repair it.

Unfortunately, we can't get a lot of great cars in the US. I don't believe the diesel Defenders were ever imported - at least not in the last 20-years or so. Same with diesel Toyota Landcruisers - plenty in Canada and the rest of the world - none here (legally anyway). I believe Rover stopped selling Defenders here about three years ago. I guess individual dealers could still get them if they wanted, but I don't suspect they sell well in gated communities.

BTW- what is English for gated community? Do you have such abominations there?

I know what a gated community is... but thankfully they are rare here. The only example of one I can think of had Margaret Thatcher as a resident...

I go with a Nissan Xterra 4wd manual tranny. It's pretty agile off road and in traffic though the gas mileage is only 18mpg. Fortunately I live fairly close to my job so I don't burn but a tank a week. It has a tubular rack on top thats strong enough to hold a sheet of plywood and photographer for a shooting platform if needed.

In our Gated Communities in California you will find a plethora of H1 and H2 Hummers and other vehicles of the same general ilk (i.e. Mercedes and BMW SUVs, Escalades, and Navigators). The Toyota Prius is very popular as a companion to the Hummer.

Ford Explorers go well, and I understand they are a dime-a-dozen down over the border. Can be REAsonably economical on a long haul (all downhill with a tail wind and no LF in the back).

But I love the way you can open the rear window for the 35mm or the whole back door for the LF .

I replaced my much abused Cherokee (192,000 miles on the original engine!) last October with an Explorer. The wife has stolen it from me now that we have two kids. hehe. On a good day, we get about 17 mpg this is with the 5.0 V8. I miss that cherokee...

Actually if you stay on the pavement the Prius might be a very good option. They look to be roomy. They have that hatchback thing going...And the mileage is just insane....

I rode with Brian last Nov. Yet I was accused of driving fast, he makes me look slow.

I have an old "87" shevy 4x4 that has a soft lift. Had to get something that my son could drive that would fit his feet (size 16, they have their own zip code)

BTW I like what Dortheya Lange used.

Holy smoke - that would go fast with a 5.0 V8 and an Explorer sticker on the back.

edit: BTW it's a beauty and almost impossible to come by in NZ! You've covered the spectrum with Fords!

I have one of these beasts:

nissan_march_7158.jpg

1000cc, get's amazing mileage, has a lot of storage being a hatchback, if it gets stuck in mud I can just pick it up and move it, and best of all had enough left over from the purchase to get an 8x10 Dorff outfit

Maybe I should put a platform on top of it? lol

I know you guys are kidding about the Hummers and stuff, but seriously, I applaud Sean and others who have made ethical choices.

Been driving full size vans for the past ten years both Chevy and Dodge. Both have served me well with reliability and reasonable fuel economy. The Chevy has a better quality radio then the Dodge. Dodge seat was more comfortable. O Ya the paint fell off the Dodge, but we never had any rust.
