Howdy folks,

A very casual inspection suggests that the film speed may have been ISO 0.4, and I am intrigued enough to do a more thorough density curve for my process. Before I do, I wanted to check a detail. On the left is 2422 (developed by me) while on the right is some Velvia 50 developed by a lab, and I see a huge difference in the opacity of the unexposed area. Is this inherent of B/W transparency or is this caused by my process*?

My process
Code:
No prewash
Develop:
   Rodinal + tap water: 12 mL + 900 mL. Rotary, 12 minutes, 20 C
Stop:
   Ilfostop + tap water: 30 mL + 570 mL. Invert by hand 15x
Fix:
   Ilford Rapid fixer + tap water: 120 mL + 480 mL. Rotary, 8 minutes, 20 C
Rinse:
   Fill with tap water, dump
   Fill with tap water, invert 5x, dump
   Fill with tap water, invert 10x, dump
   Fill with tap water, invert 20x, dump
   Fill with tap water + 40 mL Isopropanol. Rotary, 10 minutes
Final rinse:
   De-ionized water + Isopropanol + Edwal LFN: 1 L + 40 mL + 5 drops. Gentle agitation for 30 seconds, then rest for ~2 minutes
Hang to dry

Is it possible that the fixer or the Isopropanol are reducing the opacity of the unexposed areas?

You aren’t getting full d-max because you aren’t developing it long enough. Need to find the datasheet again, but you need to develop this film an insanely long time in high contrast developers to achieve the intended results. Something like 15 minutes in DK-50 and 10 minutes in D-19… However, if you do that I have found that you need to expose the film at like 0.005 ISO. Honestly I might try developing it a shorter time and dealing the lower d-max

Have you tried developing at a high temperature?

No, I have not, I’ve just been using HC-110 A for 20 minutes at room temp.

Aha! Will try Rodinal 1+25 for 30 minutes, and take it from there. Thanks.

Rodinal 1+25 (20 mL + 500 mL), developed for 30 minutes with continuous agitation at 20 C gives 7+ stops of delta between transparent and opaque. A subject metered at ISO 0.2 looks ok as well. Will do a density curve next week.

I should definitely try this film again at some point, I think I was just developing it wayyy to much

As promised, here are my data.


I assumed ISO 0.1 and shot 5 frames: +10, +2, +1, -1, and -2. I used the end of the roll to measure the opacity of a blank exposure. Only the +2, +1, -1, and -2 were used in the curve fit below.


I assume that the film ISO is defined by where Zone 5 (a normal exposure) gives me a density exactly half way between transparent (+10) and opaque. The answer (-0.6) means that the film is 0.6 stops faster than metered, which I will round to 0.5 stops faster than metered, so ISO 0.14.
