I find an ammonium chloride pre-coat unnecessary with all the papers I use (Canson XL, Stonehenge, Revere, and HPR...the first two do benefit from acidification. I use Sulfamic Acid). Having the ammonium chloride mixed in part A is enough. For an 8x10 print, I find that 10ml of developer solution is plenty, to be able to cover the paper.
One must start with a negative with appropriate density range, otherwise you will never get clean whites.
