So it’s OK to deplete your savings on your hobbies?
In all honesty, i think he was saying just the opposite.

But as others have said, pretty much all hobbies are "expensive"
Boats, guns, aviation, race cars, antiques, pottery, stained glass, Guitars and Amps..!!!
The list goes on and on.

We all need to exercise a little self control 🙂 🙁 🙂 🙁

Life circumstances also inform how we use our money.

I have no kids, and having reached 50 I doubt I ever shall nor do I desire any at this point. So it's less important to me that I leave something substantial to pass on. If I and my partners spend our money on photography, travel, music and other passions....it's got few consequences down the line. I might well feel differently if I had three children and a grandchild or two on the way....which some of my contemporaries already have.

It may be fair to say that there are some people who will require their film cassettes to be prised out of their "cold dead hands"

That's a saying by someone called Sid or was that El Cid ?😁

Well you gotta get that film developed somehow.

The frequency with which I justify some photographic purchase by saying to myself "I've spent more on stupider things" does not speak highly of my financial self-control..

These days, I could easily equate the cost of a roll of B&W film with a pint of beer at my local pub.....indeed when in London it's closer to colour film. The film will probably give me years, even decades of enjoyment from the photos I take. That doesn't mean the beer is necessarily a bad purchase. It also serves it's purpose.

One does not buy beer to drink, better to say one rents beer.

How much is a pint of decent beer where u are now? In LA craft beers are about $9. And the sneaky they thing they do if you order some fancy Belgium beers, is they pour them into glasses (labelled for that beer) that is a lot less than a pint. But still charge what you assume are the pint prices.

And to make us feel better about that short pour of Belgian ale… they call the cup a “chalice”. I’d rather a full pint in a dirty glass than less in a chalice.

Craft ales in my city (southeastern Montana) are 4 dollars in a couple places, 5-6 dollars in others, and those are full pints. We are a city of about 100,000 and have 9 breweries so lots of choices.

We should start a new thread in The Lounge about The Expense of Drinking Beer!

I was shocked when I saw how much I spent on booze last year. The price of drinking the good stuff!

I love film. Which is why I shoot it, a lot.

I've been tracking my film use since Sep 2014. From then until now - 1025 rolls. Some of it colour film, some B&W. Some E6 etc. Just rough guessing it (remember some films are much more expensive than others) picking an arbitrary number of $7/roll of film, that is $7175.

$7175 in film since end of 2014. But wait, there's more! Developing. Only in the last few years I've developed B&W myself. So again, taking that into account, I'll estimate $7/roll for all my C41, B&W, E6.

EDIT!! Serious math error !

Film dev = 1025x7 =$7175.
Hello Huss - Life can sometimes be less complicated.
Simple math : SHOOTING SLIDES

the lowest price was 2005 -2006 around 27 bucks (10x135)

2009 you had to pay around 36 bucks (10x135)

AT THE END OF THIS YEAR YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY THE SAME PRICE AS YOU DID 14 YEARS AGO, JUST THIS FOR THE SINGLE FILM IN 135 !

......
until then, have a few nice days

I'm wondering about that ??? When i look at the cost of the beers i have already consumed this year, i can hardly touch the cheapest Beutler developer formula for this money.

But the raw chemicals for Beutler are actually extremely low?

But where is my mistake? it won't have been the wrong beer !

......have an nice day - and have as many beers as you're confortable with

Akshully last year I sold off all my remaining E6 film. Made out pretty nicely as most of it was given to me from studios who went digital.
Good thing, seeing the price of beer.

(I sold the E6 because the dev costs were getting goofy. And I prefer the look of c41..)

Not really - there is a small light at the end of the darkness :

Film manufacturer have to order raw chemicals for production around one year in advance.
They were forced to calculate the planned quantities with
the math you prefer.

(also with a serios math error : named THE CORONA FACTOR)

as a result manufacturers were meanwhile sold out with
many raws and a lot of products.
The future will show if the decision to further increase prices
is wise.
I can imagine the temtation was great.
Now they run the risc of getting into a market situation
with an increase of capacity in wich later demand will have
fallen.
Same procedure as in the years of digital change for the mass of photographers.

Is this a small light for you Huss?

I would like to appreciate that we are getting fallen prices again, but at a very high level.

On the other hand we may have then new films.

Films that are still familiar to us but have been discontinued
for many, many years!!!!! 😉

Without wishing to go too far down this alleyway, British pubs are only permitted to sell beer in pints, half pints and third pints. So any chalice of Belgian beer will be one of those measures. If I ask for a "pint" and get any less, the pub is breaking the law. Unless serving from a bottle, that is....then it's stated what the capacity of the bottle is. And that often is less than a pint. Cost of a good pint is typically £6.50 in London now, sometimes more. Up in the rarefied atmosphere of Luton where I live, more like £5. Unless i go somewhere specifically known for cheap beer (Wetherspoons).

That's often more than I pay for a roll of HP5+ since I roll from bulk, and definitely more than Fomapan. It's not much less than I paid for my last bunch of Fuji Superia 400. Is film really expensive when I consider that a couple of pints with friends can cost as much as shooting and developing two or three rolls of film?

As the saying goes....you pays your money, and takes your choice.
