Someone has finally come up with a decent way to sell camera gear on the internet, other than ebay.

www.cameragas.com

Hopefully this will pan out, although the plan is to charge $5 for each auction. Nothing more.

I'll take eBay and the APUG Classifieds

Yes, it's Jorge. He's been flogging it on RFF. It looks like a good idea, but I don't really know how well it'll pan out.

Looking at the pricing it seems mighty retail like. Maybe that will change with more traffic.
Someone mentioned a $5 flat fee. That's very high for some small ticket items.

I thought it is a bit pricey.

The best Ebay substitute is just to your left. I've been selling stuff here and trying to guess what ebay might end at, then going a bit less and it seems to work. I'd far rather sell here and give 3% to apug than fight all the software engines at ebay. It just seems like a hassle to me.

I'll agree with Jim and others, this site is great for buying/selling equipment.

My impression of the new alternative, was everything over priced.

Why sell on a tiny site with few eyes looking at what's on offer?

I think what Jorge Torballa is trying to build is a "virtual KEH" with a dash of eBay.

If you look at the right side, you will see that he currently has two sponsors - Robert White and popflash. They were (are) sponsors he had when he owned RFF.

My guess is that a lot of the current gear up for sale is from those commercial dealers - which might explain the top-dollar prices.

Presumably, if he can get the site going and get more listings from "ordinary folk" it might be worth looking at when one is "in the mood" to buy.

Anyway, what's wrong with another marketplace? The more web-based venues for camera gear, the more transparent the pricing.

I really think Ebay needs some good clean competition, and I know Jorge wanted more of a commercial venture than RFF, so I think it's a win-win on those two points.

I think Jorge intends for this to be far more than a classified section on any system such as this, RFF or whatever.

I really don't know if I will join or not. I'm not really a gear trader at all. I know it will take some time for the new system to develop any kind of selection like Ebay has. Ebay has almost anything, but it seems to be a magnet for those with ill intent.

It's amazing how fast the internet spreads the word just about anything.

Thanks for visiting the GAS site. Your observations are correct. Currently MOST listings are from a few dealers and the intent is to build up a large selection of choices. In due time, when the word gets out and others start posting the site will definitely show a larger range of prices. All it takes is tine and a good word from one person to the other. For those of you who remember RFF in the old days, it was a ghost town for the first two or three months. Then it started growing. It became popular because it is a good site. I hope the same will happen with CameraGAS. Its' 100% up to the community to make it happen. Regardless, ALL ads are free for now and the foreseeable future. So, it won't cost you anything other than a few minutes to use an alternative to eBay.

Thanks for the comments and criticism. They will be used to make a better site.

Is this the same Jorge

who lives in Mexico? I've been wondering how come he doesn't post here anymore.

different Jorge. The Mexican Jorge can be found on the LF forum the 'GAS' Jorge referred to here is a former owner of the RangeFinderForum (RFF).

Thanks JD
