The comeback?

Those who have failed at photography should be considering a different vocation or hobby.

Also, its time to properly draw a distinction between photography (film, metal and glass plate), and graphic arts (all things digital).

How does one fail at a hobby?

And isn't there enough going on in this thread without your attempt to exclude digital from the realm of photography?

i gave her the head of the photo department's phonenumber so she could let the students know she was there
when/if they take color classes... not sure if they take color classes, and not sure what the additional photo classes after
photo 1 rate .. but IDK even 30-35 years ago there were never many people who continued after photo 1 or photo 2
only hard core people

hi donj
you didn't know, digital photography isn't photography its something else ... not sure what, but something else ...

That is an important contact. It's not like we are overflowing with good Photo gear and supply, and labs in the SF Bay area. It behooves an academic institution to have a good relationship with these suppliers and stay abreast of their relative services. Recommendation is another level and I leave that for others to decide what that really means.

What I call "One-and-out" is measurable and highest at the entry-level. 82% of Intro to Photo (film) do not take another class while 61% from Intro to Digital Photo do not take another class.

In the "Pro" level courses, Intro has the most tenuous roster, much as an entry level class, but has most of its success evenings and weekends. With its 50% repeat rate it lays foundations for subsequent Intermediate and Advanced classes which contain multiples of 57% and 95% respectively.

Glancing down the sunshiney road to where this is all leading, I'd like to lay down the challenge/request that the majority try to make it through this familiar terrain just once without resorting to overdefensiveness, ad hominem attacks, appeals to authority, and other such annoyances and fallacies. Thanks!

This is not about film vs. digital, though understanding "The Comeback" examines a tension between the two. Let's ignore the baiting and red herrings; this is awkward enough.

My superior intellect allows me to see things as they are.
That and your dashing good looks and wit.

That said, I disagree that we need make the determination you suggest. We are trying to establish an evaluation of analogue survival.

You've said that before when challenged. Maybe you should run for president lol. Or at the very least be vice-president to the incumbent. You two it seems would be best buds, what with your superior iq's and all

You crack me up!

Who is we? The topic of this thread is about the COMEBACK of film, not its SURVIVAL. Stop twisting things for your own agenda.

I'm sure you would hate to see film ever make any kind of comeback. That would go against all the incomplete, inaccurate info your students have been taught.

Its called sarcasm.

I don't see film-only people insulting the digital users. Always the other way around.

hey aguilliver
not sure if you have been reading the last few pages of this thread
but it's happening right now ... and its too bad ...

huh, he's a hater because he has to teach kids in 2019 photography skills
that will help them find a job, using a curriculum mandated by the school where he teaches.

btw
in order for something to come back, it has to be able to survive...

Your reply uses sarcasm to make what many would consider, and you clearly intend to be, a very offensive comparison. Just as I predicted.

What is inaccurate about the enrollment and attrition data he has cited about the film classes at the college where he teaches?

The recent discussions have centered mostly on the differences between the two mediums and not so much bashing of users, as a response to those bringing up criticisms of film.

How do we know it is accurate or not. But that is beside the point.

He has a chip on his shoulder with this thread and his skewing of the direction of this thread and the continued, overkill rant of his demonstrates an agenda which I believe is damage control. He knows his students may be reading this thread.

Bullshit. Its exactly as aguilliver stated, and its always the same people. same thing as happened here

They are way too young.

that's right, in order to get a user name one has to be between the ages of 65 and 80 and have
an intimate relationship with kodachrome and the zone system. and a beard helps with the section committee.
you also need to be able to yell "GET OFF MY LAWN" really really well.

I am 50. But I otherwise meet the criteria.
