How can ULF prices be good for roll film?

A master roll - the ultimate large format roll film! I think what everybody's getting at is large format film typically comes in sheets, not rolls. However, part of the 2013 ULF run was for bulk rolls of odd sizes of film (bulk 127, anyone?) so in that context, Stone's comment makes perfect sense.

there were 4 (possibly 5) roll films offered as bulk rolls...

46mm 50ft (for re-rollsing 127)
70mm non-perf 50ft (for re-rolling 116/616 and also 70mm backs that don't sue perforations to advance or frame count)
70mm perf 50ft (for 70mm Hassleblad, Mamiya, and other brands that used the 70mm canisters)
90-something (there was a long debate about the exact 94.1234 or 94.0987 as far as width, but it was for re-rolling 112).
and I think one more that was similar to the 90-something but different for some other purpose like a gunner roll or something, anyway I don't think that one got made.

So Ilford hasn't changed the name of the Special Order ULF run, but they are now basically offering to cut any size that enough people request. They may even cut the 2x3 sheets but not sure about that. Anyway, so that's what I meant... That the Freestyle prices for those roll films were cheaper than other places, by $10-$20 which adds up quickly...

I just shot a couple of rolls of this Agfa/Fuji 200 I.S.O. that I just got back from the lab, and I as a long time user of both companies films can't say the results remind me of either firms films the color balance is far warmer than either.

Yes I tried a sample and from the mini lab
it looked strange but with a scan and auto white balance it looked normal.

It could be a problem batch that they are dumping below cost.

I did not check further to see what filtration was used cause it was 24x cassettes and I hate reloading.

Every time I see this cheap film it always seem to be the Fuji 200, never 100 or 400. I recall many years ago when Sainsbury( U.K. supermarket for the benefit of non U.K.ers) sold Fuji film in bargain packs it was always 200 speed. So it is not a new thing nor given how many years ago this was, a run-down of Fuji 200 on a once sold it's gone forever basis.

I wonder why? It is almost as if this stuff was/is produced as a dedicated "cheap" line in film.

I'll add I have nothing against the stuff to stop this post starting a fight, I just wonder why it always seems to be 200 speed?

Any ideas?

Over here at two major drugstore chains I can get fresh Fuji CN film retailer-branded in 200 and 400ISO.
In the past there was even more choice of speeds with retailer-branded films.

I remember reading 15 or 20 years ago, that Kodak was saying their Gold 200 was as fine grained as the previous 100 speed film and being between 100 and 400 was the sweet spot that most consumers wanted. This was at the height of the soccer moms, point and shoot, 1-hour mini lab, days.

They said then that 200 would be replacing 100 since 100 had no advantage. I always preferred 100 for the colors and brilliance myself.

I'm sure the last color film produced and available will be ISO 200.

200 is in some ways both a useful and odd speed. Too fast to be medium, too slow to be fast. I've always wondered that it was so popular in color but not black and white. I think it's more useful and flexible for outdoor shooting than 100, but not fast enough for low light situations at all.

200 makes sense when you realize that a lot of photos are taken with low powered, in-camera electronic flash.

Yes, I wish 200 were more popular, it's an optimum "all around" film, sure you can shoot 100 B&W at 200 and 400 at 200 but it's not the same...

As I wrote I bought 10 rolls and after shooting 3 of them, and having them processed I've come to the conclusion that they aren't worth the cost of having them processed.

Why? Now that I'm approaching upcoming school I've thought of stocking up on this film for the color photo and printing courses... Since you can't print E-6 and that's all I shoot.

What's wrong with it?

Which film are you talking about, Ben? Fuji C200, Superia 200 or the Agfphoto Vista Plus 200?

Nothing at all Stone. I have been buying and shooting a bunch of it and I have been quite happy. It is $1.74 per roll at BHPhoto so I will continue to buy it for as long as I can find it. For school it should be great.

The Agfa Vista 200 in the uk has a different signature from previous Fuji 200s I've used but it is not unattractive.

If I was shooting C41 like I used to it would save a lotta money.

Both negatives have the code CA24. The only difference is the Fuji C200 also has the word Fuji on the negative, while the Agfaphoto version doesn't have it.
They are not Superia 200.
