Some years ago, when I had an interest in economics, I decided that money - whether gold/silver/other metal, pieces of paper, or big rocks on Easter Island - is best thought of as a storage mechanism for human labor.

One of the few 'good' things that the Nazis did was to salvage the devastated German hyperinflation currency by basing their new currency on 'hours of common labor' instead of (non-existent) intrinsic value. That is an idea that merits attention and would help to remove the 'fiat' pejorative from money (or, should I posit "money"?).

I am not an economist but, certainly, that's better to think about than that bit of a coin known as 'bitcoin', whose value is determined solely by hype (and hyperbole). - David Lyga

The whole idea of money IS hype... It means nothing.

Watch some Star Trek, be a futurist, and dream of a better world, Rodenbury and Jacque Fresco had it right...

Having watched a lot of Star Trek, I think I can see where this part of the discussion may lead, lol.

True, plus there's perceived value, like diamonds for example, which aren't really that rare, and other previous rare earth stones like ruby's and emeralds are way more "valuable" except that the huge diamond owners hold the diamonds "at bay" to increase their value and convince happy couples that they won't be happy unless they have one...

It's all a crock...

Color is way more fun than clear anyway

Keep trying to convince my GF of this... It hasn't worked yet.

I kind of wish Tea were still a valuable trade resource, not only was it fun to carry in bricks around china, but you could make some nice tea too, AND grow your own... The good old days when money literally used to grow on trees... HAH!

My then-fiance was adamant she didn't like diamonds, wanted just a blue topaz. Got a very nice ring with a blue topaz. It is, if I do say so, beautiful.

That doesn't seem right... B&H has it cheaper..

View attachment 80729

It's not unusual for B&H fresh film to be the same or less than Freestyle short date or past day.

Freestyle fresh TMX is $89/100', short date is on sale for $79. B&H has fresh for $77.

I love Freestyle, but they're not really competitive on film and paper, at least not the brands you can get elsewhere. Their house brand stuff is a bargain if you like Foma (and Adox for the MCP papers) though. I still buy some from them to support them and to consolidate shipping when I'm buying other stuff (like any of the myriad chemicals B&H can't/won't ship.)

Fully agreed, it bugs me a bit, as in my perspective they take advantage of college students who don't know any better.

That said I do support them, their ilford ULF prices were the best for roll film, and Adox Adonal they will ship. Just wish their Arista boxes were smaller, they don't fit in my snapware(tupperwear) and sadly I'm looking to do contact printing soon and the FOMA stuff has too many emulsion pinholes, it sucks because I really like it's look and grain for enlarging. But you get what you pay for ya know? Who knows maybe I'll come back to it, I really like it for portraits.

On the subject of the real value of money, I vaguely recall reading about some economist who did some interesting work using the price of a "Big Mac" hamburger to compare the relative efficiencies of varios economies.

I would expect the price of Big Macs to be going up fast in Argentina...

Stone, do you mind if I ask a question?

Do you EVER log off of APUG? - David Lyga

Nope, except when sleeping LOL

You have to remember, you and I are basically the opposite, you don't even own a computer, and I have a computer in my pocket that is on me at all times, part of this has to do with the fact that at a moments notice I could be called for a job to which I have to always be available, so my phone is always on me, and part of it is just my enthusiasm toward understanding more about film in general and constantly reading and researching, and part of it is because I'm often available to socialize when everyone else is working, so I have a lot of time on my hands that no one else is available to have a normal human interaction with, and during that time I spend a lot of it on APUG

Oh, I see. There really IS quite a difference in generational mindsets. I see computers as a tool and not, as so many younger do, as a part of my biology.

Thank you Stone. You have educated me. I do hope that you get enough sleep. But heaven forbid, if you fell into a swimming pool and ruined your 'computer' would your withdrawal symptoms be manageable? - David Lyga

Haha!

Well actually believe it or not they make a case for the phone called a life proof case, I actually don't have one, but those who do can actually take their phones swimming with them... Hah!

the person who invents a covering to prevent these 'smart' phones from getting their screens cracked is going to make a fortune. This is why I posted the 'graphene' item a few weeks ago. - David Lyga

He may not log off but he does post on LFPF too so he doesn't devote ALL of his spare time to APUG!

Yeah, I could have bought my Harman special-program film for less from Freestyle but I wanted to give some business to Unique Photo.

Freestyle gets about 4 hours labor from me per year.

Stone, I am in the 'stone age' when it comes to technological proficiency. (Amazing, you are NOT logged on to APUG as I write this at 8:29 AM Tuesday morning in Philadelphia.) - David Lyga
