I think I like this film
Robert was kind enough to send me three Retro 100 Tonal 135 films that he is also selling in Dead Link Removed now (also in 120). Thanks a lot!
I tried one in my Contax G1 with the 28mm and a light yellow filter; the sky was heavily overcast. Unaware of the no-go of Rodinal and tap water I did indeed get spots all over.
Ignoring the spots and judging from scans and naked eye inspection, I find this a very nice film: excellent tonality and sharpness (in Rodinal 1+25), nice grain (reminiscent of APX100, to me at least).
I also like the film's flatness, both longitudinally and across the width, and its transparency- it has a very clear base.
My film (this is 135, not 120) had a light leak into the first frame. Apparently the little black 'cloth' that seals off the cassette wasn't tight enough. I did not keep the cassette in bright sunlight, so this is a bit disconcerting. The darkroom was pitch-dark during loading, certainly no problem there. Maybe this is an isolated problem with this one film.
I am curious after the 120 version. Having some doubts also. Rodinal being my primary and most-loved developer I won't like having to use demi-water all the time; it's expensive (1 euro/litre in Holland) and fussy.
Also, I don't like the slightest risk of light leaks because of backing paper being not tight enough. I know this is 100% pilot error, but I am not always a good pilot and mistakes we all make now and then. Rather no risks there.
I'll probably get some from Robert though. If only to have tried ;-)
Some samples from today (Contax G1, 28mm, yellow filter, Rodinal 1+25, 8 minutes at 20 deg. C, inversion 1st 30s continuous, then two inversions at the start of each minute).
This is not a scientific test of sharpness or grain or whatever, just sharing impressions. Overall, I like this film.
[Samples attached in the next post. For some reason my links to the images don't work.]
