I've been flying with my tripod checked in a medium sized Tenba TTP case for a few years now. I always pack the tripod with the head attached, but the handles removed or loose and never have had any problem, but yesterday it really passed the test.

My connecting flight from Phoenix to NYC was delayed, so they announced they would be doing a "quick turn" to get the plane out as soon as it arrived, and in rush mode I watched the baggage truck make a turn that was a bit too quick, sending my tripod case flying from the top of the stack onto the tarmac, followed by seven or eight other suitcases. I had my Tiltall in there, Minolta Flashmeter III and accessories, Linhof 6x7 back, small Metz flash unit, flash bracket, and a few other odds and ends. All came through unharmed.

The one I have is the 34. B&H also shows the 46, which is longer, and I think they used to make a shorter one, but I don't see it at B&H or Calumet's website.

Thanks. David, any guy still using a Tiltall (and admitting it in public) is okay in my book.

Hey, I like Tiltalls too! I have one that lives in the back of my car along with an OLD Toyo just in case of roadside photographic emergencies.

Sounds like a great case David, I'm glad your gear survived.

Tiltall's? I still use my original Marchioni Bros. version, though the Gitzo's (older 3 series performance and a 5 series performance) get used a whole lot more. I'd love to find some parts for my tiltall, seems the guy that is supporting them doesn't support the old ones.

Erie,

Try Sherry Krauter for Tiltall parts. I believe she bought all the remaining inventory when Leitz stopped servicing them. Her website is: sherrykrauter.com Her email: repairs@sherrykrauter.com Phone: 845-496-8834 She is also one of the best Leica repair people around.

I have two Leitz Tiltalls. One is pretty worn out and a little wobbly, but I keep it in my office for occasional impromptu copy work, and I suppose I'll cannibalize it for parts eventually.

Once I was carrying one around and a guy with two Holgas around his neck stopped me near Central Park and told me how he used to have three of them until they wore out, and they were his favorite tripods.
