But in fairness, I think that all of us have three approaches to equipment: User, Collector/Investor, Admirer. How much any of those motivates you at any moment probably varies.

I shoot the heck out of my cameras but I also admire the Leicas for their precision, the Wisner for the beauty of it's quartersawn Honduran mahogany, the durability of the Nikon F family, the wonderful utility of Graflex, and so forth. At some point I became an accidental collector but, over the last couple of years, sold off everything I wasn't using regularly.

Speaking of which ... the darkroom beckons.

Buy a lot, sell a lot, and eventually settle on a few things you really like.

...and there always seems to be a few things you keep though you can't always say why?

Very true. Similar for me. I see my equipment first and foremost as tools, but secondary to that I do like good tools, but don’t see myself as a collector.

Me neither. I could not be bothered to care about black paint, serial numbers, mint condition.
