I need one of those " things" that I can use to to screw over the release of a screw mount Leica to use a cable release. What the heck are they properly called so I can search to find one?

I've seen the adapter called a 'Leica cable release adapter' (or 'Yashica cable release adapter', which might be cheaper), or 'Leica nipple'.

"Leica nipple". I think I still have one in a drawer. Yashica TLR's used them.

Apologies: my two earlier posts were not to the point. My only excuse is that it was late at night. The "collar" I was referring to is the one you remove to make way for the cable release (on the earlier Barnacks, at any rate). They do get easily mislaid; but that's not what the OP was asking about.

Perhaps this would work for you. But I can only say it is good on my Leica copy, not the real thing.

This 'nipple' should be the same for Leica as for the original Nikon F and perhaps can easily be found on ebay...
The whole thing, cable and attached typical nipple has the Nikon reference AR-2 and I saw one for about € 4,50 in Germany.

I agree, I use my Nikon F cable release with my Leica IIIf cameras and it works like a dream. You don't have to unscrew the collar on the camera, the end screws on inside the collar, equally if you've lost the collar it will still screw on to the shutter button surround.
