Actually I do doubt that people can get Leica (in any form and shape) for $5.

Well I was being sarcastic about people bragging they got x camera for a ridiculous price as if was the usual price. I think those are rare chances based on people that either don't know what they are selling or are simply desperate. Don't think tha neither situation is something to brag about. But thats my opinion

As a hobbyist (not a dealer) I've bought and sold (cheap) cameras on eBay for a few years now.

I watch the auctions and have picked up some great bargains and quite a few turkeys, sometimes total junk beyond any hope of repair. But I see this as part of the fun.

When I sell I'm careful to describe all functions of the camera, including all known faults, major and minor. Result? My cameras go at auction for about £20 - £30. Similar cameras listed by others with zero description other than the single magic word "untested" often go for £40 - £50... Go figure.

There are lots of people that sell a lot of photographic gear for next to nothing -- every day -- for lots of reasons.

-- They just want to get rid of it -- I bought a like new AF Minolta with lens still in the box -- from a gal who got it as a wedding present and never used it and had no idea what it was worth
-- They place something in the wrong category or spelled wrong -- so no SEARCH can find it -- I got an 800mm for pennies because it was listed as a mm lens.
-- They have no idea if it works or how to turn it on -- they list it AS IS -- so they do a BUY IT NOW for next to nothing
-- Lens listed under the name of the filter -- or listed as broken when it's the filter that's cracked

I could go on all day.

These are my favorite eBay buys...

I once bought an item that was described as a "Plus-X Camera" for $25 + shipping (about the same). It was a very nice Anniversary Graphic, converted to Graflok back, and a bunch of accessories. That quickly became one of my favorite cameras for the combination of versatility and low acquisition cost. The "Plus-X" aspect was an old Kodak data sheet that was in the box.

My first eBay purchase was a "Karvee Camera" -- which was listed that way because the seller couldn't read the German style lettering on the Kawee Camera, better known as a Patent Etui. Came with a leather case for camera and three plate holders (including the holders), which had been opened by hacksawing the latch pin (I picked the lock and removed the pin stub in about fifteen seconds once I received the camera). I paid $15 (in 2002). Large format camera that fit in a suit jacket pocket...

it pays to shop around.... people are still complaining about how expensive film is because they shop on Amazon where some sellers are asking $20 for one roll of Fuji 200..

As for the F5 priced how it is... well that is because today's film shooter does not want one. They want a slowed down old school film experience. Not a massive auto everything camera that pretty much is just like using a digital SLR.

The meaning of these things changes over time: Once upon a time, speedy motorized cameras were alluring, but today, who wants to blaze through a roll of film when it costs $25, color film is in chronically short supply, and mobile devices and digital cameras offer much higher frame rates?

It's a bit like the phonograph record: It's sort of a revival, but also kind of a reinvention in which the physical object itself might be one of the biggest attractions.

That probably depends on what the word "pro" means. To me, it means someone who does professional work. Commercial photographers, who work for clients, certainly do use digital.

I not only looked at the listing prices on eBay, I looked at the completed listings too. Yikes!

That F5 is a better value, and well worth the asking price. A pro film camera is sealed better for climate changes, and would be much more reliable over time. Better engineering, better build quality. I want one. It would be nice to buy it and not worry about it breaking. Plus, that thing can take fire off lots of perfectly exposed shots in no time. Very handy for sports, horse races or portraits.

Well... I wouldn't know. I can't get into peoples heads. You were asking a question and I did my best trying to explain people's behavior  I paid far more for my Nikon FM3a than I did for the F3 which is a far better camera. I guess it's good in a sense that people who appreciate pro-level features can take advantage of this?

I suppose not, but $10- that's a different story. 😁

It worked for Eli! 😅

It's less easy with higher end camera bodies to get something cheap on eBay but lenses can be a different story. Instead of searching for the lens itself (which is where you see top prices) search for the types of camera the lens would typically be used on, the less glamorous the body the better. It's an interesting exercise and you can often find a cheap camera that happens to have the lens you want or what amounts to a lens at normal price with a body for free. 'Spares or Repair' often scares people away but it's usually the body, sellers are sometimes lazy and leave the lens on as part of the sale, and I've had a couple of very nice Nikkors that way, and a few camera body projects for wet weekends.

Which Leica did he get? He asked for it I didn't think he get it.

Owning every camera that I shall ever need, I am free from temptation. However, I recently bought a Spotmatic and lens from KEH with added warranty with shipping as a present for my grandson for about $100. My daughter reported that camera looks like new except for very slight dent near prism.

(Tapped Post Reply in error). Meter works, but will have grandson use exposure table or calculator so that he understands relationship between size of hole in lens and time that hole stays open. My friend, the late Bernie Boston - dean of WH photographers, told me of a lady photographer for major news outlet that was unable to shoot story because batteries died in her automatic camera and she couldn’t use manual because she had no idea of f stop/shutter speed relationship. Bernie set camera for her.

She could ask someone there.

and to buy in volume on favorite film(s). I asked B&H for a price on 25 rolls of FP4 in 120 and they knocked 7% off their listed price.
