Split Grade Printing?

Hey guys,

I was looking at youtube and this guy does split grade printing using grade 5 for deep shadow detail and grade 00 for highlight details. Has anyone done this? also.. the grades referring to contrast filter use?

Yes and it works just fine but,it's not my favorite technique as it is sometimes difficult to find the proper balance between the hard and soft filter. Nevertheless, it works for many skilled printers just fine.
