Separating Photos From Glass

We have some old photos which are stuck to pieces of broken glass from one of those large frames which have several openings. What would be a good way to remove the photos from the glass? Just soak them in water? Maybe even slightly soapy water? Or would the soap damage the emulsion? They are just standard colour photos.
