Me: I've put a few rolls through the camera, and found no issues with it.

Buyer: These rolls... Is that something I need to replace often?

Me: I imagine you'd have to do so every 36 shots.

---

Seriously?! I can't make this stuff up!

Good call. Forgot to post the question: Is society that far removed from analog?

Also, how is it mean when I answered the question as best I could?

Classic!

I think people need to be reminded when they are being stupid.

People remind me I'm being stupid on here all the time

Yes, people are that far removed from film... Rolls... Of what? 1's and 0's??

because you posted it here to mock the person who asked it.

no wonder people thing folks who use film are a--holes

If I only mock a person behind their back, that'd be something else...

But the conversation is pretty much how I am in real life, plus I do educate along with the "mocking". My closest friends do call me an a--hole, and they've been doing so for decades. Maybe I am one, but I don't think it's right to damn the whole film community because of me being one.

I don't think it was mean or spiteful at all. I think all of us say things that we realize are stupid (I know I do...) and honestly - you are in the market for a film camera and it doesn't occur to you to do the slightest bit of research? Again, I don't get any hate from the seller or the response. Can't we just see it as an amusing anecdote and move on, rather than a deeper insight into the film community?

And they couldn't even land on the moon for real and had to fake it....

Hahaha

I don't actually believe that but it's a funny argument I know you're familiar with seeing here lol.

I think people need to be reminded when they are being stupid.

I think in this case one should distinguish between stupid and ignorant.
(Keep in mind I'm no native speaker, so I might be wrong.)

A real human being of course has questions about the world in which (s)he lives. And then there are those who will not try to understand, who will make cheap shots at anything or anybody because they have nothing positive to give to make this a more civilized world.

Hey Stone--read post #17, and shut yer cake hole about the moon landing. My dad worked on the LEM and excursion modules--we really did land on the moon(crude mane called here).:whistling:

I feel the same as jnanian here. All too often we forsake the moral high road and make fun of uneducated people. What I see here is the OP missing an opportunity to educate someone about film, and possibly making a new convert to our way of life. I think this thread could have been presented in better form, delving instead into the incredulity of someone not knowing how film cameras work, rather than what appears to be bragging about how he treated the fellow like a moron.

This is what I think! If I were the person in the o.p. I would have felt and had the same knee-jerk reaction. That is " surprised" and "where did that come from" "what kind of answer is that?#%*%???" when I heard or read the response to the ad. We all use film here, true. we are slightly, and in some way removed from societies norms, by doing so. . . . . When we share THAT CONTRAST with others in our "norm" "our circle of fun" a.k.a our group, WE ALL see the disconnect. I do not see that as being mean to either person. I see that as a funny and humorous situation, because of the "surprise" element to it. I think if anything, the o.p. is exposing him/herself as some one NOT with the "times", (understanding social norms, yes- image capturing is one of those, ) and the person who took offense "should lighten' up, Francis" attributed to Stripes, the movie, Sergeant Hulka, to be exact!

I think my point was that the OP's response shows effete snobbery, and a total lack of understanding that he could have made a difference in a positive manner, rather than the route he took. We should all remember, this is a public forum, and our posts are read by folks attempting to learn by asking those of us with experience. What do you think their reaction to this will be? I think they will be extremely hesitant to ask for fear of ridicule. Of course, this is just my opinion.
I was taught that the only stupid question was the one not asked, I also believe there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

Fascinating Jim. Apparently, we are witnessing a world in which the inhabitants have formed a group dedicated to an arcane and antiquated technology, yet at the same time are seen as being elitist techno snobs. I am wondering how someone could be a Luddite and an Elitist at the same time, but then it's humans we're talking about, a very erratic and conflict orientated species.

Please don't assume (1) that the buyer was uneducated, (2) that they did not know how film cameras work, and (3) that I missed an opportunity to educate someone about film. In this case, all three assumptions are wrong.

I don't get your point.
If you both were joking why did you put this in this ethics forum and why did you ask whether your reply was mean ??
