Ray McSavaney died on the morning of July 2. I was hoping someone else would post this since I didn't personally know Ray McSavaney, but I know his incredible work and I feel he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Ray.

*edit: here is some info posted by John Sexton:

Remembering Ray McSavaney - Photographer, Educator, Author, and Friend
Ray was one of my closest friends for forty years. I have written a tribute to Ray. It is posted on my web site. If you are interested, I would be pleased if you would take a look. The link is below. As Eric mentioned a fund, Friends of Ray, was created, with Ray's approval, to raise money to attempt to organize, catalog, and store Ray's photographic archive in preparation for attempting to place his work at an appropriate institution. Donation information is included in my essay. In addition, at this time when you purchase a copy of Ray's beautiful book, Explorations, 100% of the net profit goes to the "Friends of Ray" fund. Explore in peace Ray.

Oh! What a tremendous loss to the photographic world. I am proud to say he was a friend. Ray was a wonderful photographer who truly devote his life to his art, and his work was truly art. My treasure of a few of his images is even more dear to me now. Soft spoken by voice, but a shouter via his work. He took the basics of photography we all know and expanded them to limits none of the rest of us approach.
Goodbye dear friend. I will always miss you.
Jim

I only know his work through Louis Swenson. Sorry to hear this news.

Ray McSavaney

Wonderful tribute John, and book ordered. Today is my 51st birthday and like most of my birthday's the last few years I leave my work and my family to go off on my own to collect my thoughts, reflect on life and make some photographs. Today it will be to Montgomery Woods northwest of Ukiah. Reading your tribute of Ray set me in a good frame of mind for today to appreciate what I've got, and to enjoy the wonders of nature and photography in the spirit of a wonderful man. Thank you.

A sad day for photography, indeed. Great tribute, John.

I just got back. What a day. Again, so glad I read your tribute John and viewed Ray's portfolio just before my day. Wonderful inspiration and made my day even better than expected or hoped.
