Hi all. I have just bought a rz67 off ebay with the seller stating that it was functioning but he hadn't got a lens for it and didn't need it any more.

Upon the camera arriving, I attached the lens I'd just bought and then discovered that the camera wouldn't cock properly and the mirror was locked up. When I pull down the lever, it encounters no resistance till the final 90% where it winds a bit. The mirror under the focusing screen doesn't budge but something does flap down half way in front of the lens and then retracts with the lever.

Upon searching the internet for a solution, I found a post on photo.net describing my exact same problem written by the guy that sold me the camera! He had posted that the day before selling me the camera as fully functioning on eBay.

I'd send the camera back now only the lens is stuck on the camera. Is there a way to remove it without cocking the camera so I can post this thing back to the guy and get a refund?

I have opened up the side panel and done a video of the mechanism.

Is there anything I can do with the internals to remove the lens?

I would, but the body didn't come with the £200 lens that is now stuck to it! So I can't send it back till I can get the lens off.

can you contact paypal anyway and get the payment back, also contact the seller, show him the proof of his double-dealing, and tell him ur gonna have to have a repairman remove your lens from his crap body?

One would hope, unless the person is totally without shame, you could do both these t hings.

before you remove the lens, contact paypal and see what they have to say about the situation.
i have a feeling they will get your money back, and have the person pay for the service tech to remove the lens
AND if the lens/lens mount was damaged in the process maybe a new lens as well.
paypal is very easy to deal with and they know that sometimes ebay sales go sideways.
thankfully you used paypal / a credit card, so you have a leg to stand on !

good luck

I've started the return process through eBay stating the facts and I've also just dropped the camera into a repair centre who will give me a quote for the lens removal and the body repair separately. If he wants the body back he'll have to pay for the lens to be removed. I just hope. PayPal will have my back!

don't count on paypal having anyone's back but their own. it does suck you got the shaft on this. See if you can trip the shutter on the lens with a cable release, the lens should release from the body regardless of the state of the camera being cocked or not. The bayonet is really the only thing holding the lens to body, the state of cocking will move the cocking pins (2 of them on the back of the lens) to cock the shutter, but those are not used to retain the lens to the body. The retaining ring on the lens bayonet is reverse of normal (e.g. right to loosen), I believe.

Contact him and state you've seen his Photo.net post, he only joined that day. Tell him you want it sorted out or you'll pass the information to Ebay. It's fraud.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Don't let him off the hook easily. Ian and Jnanian's advices are very good.
I still can't believe he posted on the forum about its fault and then sold it via PayPal without mentioning its problem. I wonder does he suffer from myopia!

just had a very similar problem with ebay camera purchase - their guarantee protected me when i was sold a camera that didn't work.

after i contacted the seller who was useless and no help, i contacted ebay. ebay confirmed if a camera is sold as "used" it must be working as designed and i got my money back, including shipping costs...

good luck

In order to open a dispute with paypal, it will automatically close the eBay one. Is this something I should do?

don't worry about the ebay one; let it close.
just go right to paypal and do it from there
it's paypal that will refund your $$ not eBay ..
and then after your refund is awarded ... then
leave feedback. maybe it was an honest mistake
and he had 2 of the exact same cameras and he sold
the wrong one ? who knows ... but paypal is pretty good
at helping people.

good luck !

Paypal first, and tell him you found his Photo.net post showing the camera was already faulty when he sold it, it's damming evidence in your favour which he can't refute.

Welcome to e-bay. I had a similar experience and will never deal with e-bay again. When I contacted the seller to return the camera he threatened to give ME a negative rating.

Welcome to APUG

I am sorry that you had this problem. Complain to PayPal and eBay. I avoid eBay for exactly this type of problem. Instead I buy from Dead Link Removed which has a great return policy or Samy's Camera.

He needs to open an "Item Not As Described Case". It takes a few days but eBay will force a full refund including shipping both ways. However, I don't know if they'll force the seller to reimburse for having the lens removed and I doubt they'll allow holding the camera until the seller complies. Sometimes justice is only lukewarm.

before saying anything else... was the lens cocked? was the body cocked? it sounds like an uncocked lens on a cocked body lock up. be sure its not your fault before starting any actions with ebay.

oh be sure the repairman writes a full report concerning the problem with the camera, especially the cause of tge lockup!

do you have a copy of the for sale ad? the posts on photonet may show deception depending on what tge repair shop writes in the report.

good luck!

edit... on the rb there is a trick to get a stuck lens off using a paper clip in a hole of tge top right triangle of tge front standard. i dont work on rzs but the lenses all lock on the same way. a small lever gets caught by a stop if the camera n lens are out of sync. the lever has to be pushed down to clear tge catch.

google it, ive posted how to do it as well as pictures of it thousands of times.

The body was not cocked as it cannot cock. That wasn't my fault though as it is due to the mechanical fault. I've opened the dispute with paypal. The seller suggested I send the camera back to him with MY lens attached so he could get it removed by his 'technicians at work' and post it back to me. What a moron.

don't send him anything unless he sends you $$$,
and make sure paypal knows your lens is stuck because of the camera .
the least thing i would do is send this guy your lens on the camera.
you get it removed and send him the bill .. and make sure paypal agrees to this.
he sold a broken camera on eBay, who knows what else he might be capable of.

Be sure to get the repairman's report in detail exactly how and why the body jammed with a lens on it.
Sounds like a user error.

The RZ doesn't require a cocked lens on a cocked body?

I just read the user manual and it says the body and the lens must be cocked before mounting a lens.

If you mounted the lens on an uncocked body, its your fault its now locked up.
Thats a user problem, not a sellers problem.

If the body wasn't able to cock before you mounted the lens.... that was the sellers problem
You should have brought that to the attention of the seller before mounting a lens on it.

You may have caused more damage by putting a lens on an uncocked body. You'll have a tough time proving it was the sellers problem now.
