I'm heading to Rome for three days at the end of December. I know there are many but what are the must see sites for photography?

Thanks,
Peter

You need pointers for photography in one of the most photogenic cities?
Well, ok, then.
The Centro Storico (historic center) is full of beautiful architecture, plazas, fountains, monuments and people. Very touristic though so have in mind that your photos will be full of tourists. The Pantheon, the Fontana di Trevi, the Plaza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo, etc are all over there. The Colosseum is a bit further down.
Then you have the calmer but also beautiful streets of Trastevere across the river.
Of course don't forget to visit the Basilica of St.Peter and the Vatican.
If you want a park, the Villa Borghese is interesting.
There is good public transportation but you can walk around all these sites if you aren't weak on legs.

I've just got back from Italy including just a day in Rome - I envy you your three days! But as Ari says, it is full of tourists. I couldn't get near the Trevi fountain for them. St Peter's Square is big enough to let them spread out a bit though. And I'll bet that like me, you'll be the only one using a viewfinder - I don't think I saw a single film camera the entire week :surprised:

Take a short bus ride to Villa d'este. The villa is famous for all its fountains. Must go there, even if you missed Villa Borghese. As you only have 3 days, you must use your time most sensibly.

Get well wrapped up with waterproofs and breathables a it can get quite cool at that time. A little bit cooler than Ireland perhaps!!!

Please DO visit the Villa d'este and send them your pictures. Those on the website are horrible!

Oh! Bring plenty, plenty and plenty of film. You will need them. They are expensive in Rome. And 120 is probably non-existent there (unless you are a local and know where specially to look for them). Same applies for spare batteries.

It may also help if you can bring an empty stomach. Food is so good.

Thanks for all your replies so far.

And yes the food is one of the best attractions when going to Italy :munch:

I photographed in Rome for three weeks last summer. Definitely bring all the film you're planning to shoot as you will not find any 120, 220, or large format.

You can find film in Rome, of many kinds actually. There is a store for professionals around the area of St.Peter (but further northwest) but unfortunately I can't remember the name of it...

That's why, as a tourist, one should try to avoid having to spend time looking for film. Bring plenty.

End of Dec the tourists might not be too bad. At least relatively.

Expect rain. So bring faster film.
