I just checked my notes and i have shot it with the 25 and 29 as well. Your compensation matches mine. I do however, start at EI 250 with this film, so I'm down to an EI of 8 with the 72 filter.

Andrew, do you have any examples of shots with R25 and how much less is the "IR" effect compared to R72 in terms of green foliage? I ask because at 3 stops and with a wide angle lens an aperture such as f8 it might be possible to square the circle of sufficient DoF with a shutter speed that makes handheld shots possible.

I have negs somewhere. I'd have to search for them. I can tell you from memory though, that the 72 has way more infrared effect, than the 25. In fact, I now only use the 72. There's a big difference even between the 29 and the 72.

I've only used Rollei IR400, but I've used it a lot. I use a Hoya R72 filter and generally expose it for 0.25 - 0.5s at f16 in bright sun at 45 latitude, equivalent to EI 2-4. So that's 7 stops overexposure relative to sunny 16 with visible light. I used to use D76 but now develop in XTOL 1:1 14min at 20C. This gives me white foliage, but not halation.

My experience has been similar: depending on season and lighting conditions, best exposures happen between 6 and 10 ASA with the R72 filter.

By the way - regarding filter choices: once upon a time I bought a Lee Infrared 87 filter to use with the Rollei IR film, and guess what? Even though the Lee description says that the filter is made to use with IR films, its cutoff is (as the name suggests) 870nm.

The Efke IR and the Rollei IR films both have sensitivity out to about 850nm, so the Lee filter is useless for these films! You can guess how I found out about this....

Thanks Andrew. I had a terrible feeling that what you said might be your answer and hsandler's very good picture would seem to confirm that the white foliage effect needs the R72

I have managed to do some IR handheld with the R72 filter. This was on a trip to Cuba (so intense tropical midday sun) and was handheld at 1/25s at I think f4. The negative was on the thin side but not severely thin. It's a bit grainy because it was a 35mm camera; the only time I did infrared with that format.
