RODINALIA : FUJI 100 NEOPAN SS TEST

Freestyle had some Neopan 100 SS at a good price, so I got a couple bricks.

I did the normal investigation, and wanted to share the results.

Warning: I like fat negatives; generous shadows and soft highlights. They work well for me because I print everything as if it were an 8x10 neg for contact printing. With a diffusion head, #2 paper, and a developer like ansco 120 or 'ansel's 130', they print wonderfully well. Expect disaster with a condensor head and Dektol.

With an EI of 100, Rodinal 1+50, 68 degrees for 16 minutes. Agitation: 15 secs (5 seconds to start, 5 seconds at the end of the 5th and tenth minutes). The D max is about 2.2.

The negative has gentle acutance effects, and clean, fine grain. I think it is a great combination for summer portraiture, and landscapes.

Here is a straight test print of the light gray house across the street.

Negative densities: under the porch, 0.15~0.2; the side of the trailer, 1.15; the sky, 1.25~1.3. Making the JPG has eaten a little of the shadow.

On review of the test image, I think I'd better trim the hedge.

So do I! I'm eager hear more about Neopan SS since I'm considering to try it out at some time. Is it a good companion to Plus-X, FP4 and the others?

DF, I don't see a link? I just ordered a bunch of Neopan 400 in 120 and 100'. I'm liking that film. I too, like a slightly flatter print. Too bad they don't have 100' rolls.

For those who are interested, I would like to recommend Dead Link Removed. I recently bought Neopan 1600 bulk film from them at a very great price.

My own limited experience with this combination (one roll of 35mm Neopan 100SS in Rodinal 1:50 for 15:00) is less positive. Negatives were too dense for my taste, although I don't have a working densitometer to quantify this, and of course a shorter development time would fix that problem. The grain was hideous -- worse (as in bigger grain sizes) than most ISO 400 films in D76 or XTOL, and maybe even worse than Tri-X in Rodinal (I'd have to pull out the one roll of Tri-X I developed in Rodinal to do a side-by-side comparison). Worse, the grain was just ugly (an admittedly subjective assessment). I shot one other roll of Neopan 100SS, which I believe I developed in D76. That combination didn't strike me as being particularly good or bad at the time, but I'd have to track it down to do a direct comparison of Rodinal and D76 for this film.
