RODINAL! You lucky Americans..

So now I have to drink 3 bottles of ADOX APH 09 because I told Stone if it wasn't Rodinal I will drink it. That was 2 days ago. Today I opened the first bottle, I am still waiting for the film to dry.

Do I drink it?

Pour it down the drain?

Mail it back to Germany?

I'm actually pretty upset. I am stuck with ADOX APH 09 garbage now. I was trying to buy Rodinal all along. My last bottles of whatever I had which were labeled Rodinal and worked great to the last drop yesterday!

What a mess!
 

Don't worry Randy. I'm sure all 3 grains in your negative will be just as big with either formula. Or you can use it for its best purpose--rat poison. But best regards Adox. I'm glad you're still out there, profitable and strong.
 
Why not use Rodanal for the european market and be done with it?
 
Dear Mirko,

I have a request: Write on the bottle that Stand development is NOT recommended and that it shall not be spread around as a valid and official development (sloppy) technique.

For some reason, Rodinal has become a synonym of 1:100, 1:200 and Stand development.

Amen, friend. If I see one more Rodinal stand development thread on the internet, I'm gonna barf. Tell you what--why doesn't somebody pour a capful in the ocean and everybody can throw their film in and wait 6000 years, and we won't have to hear about it any more till then.
 

You have judged the quality of the developer as garbage and you as in a mess, and you haven't even waited to see what the film looks like?

(Or are you being funny and I' ve missed the joke?)

I´m not sure about that. It "was" Rodinal at a time...

Also APH09 is far away from being garbage. If it has crystalized it is most likely a temperature issue in storage or transport and it can be remelted in a warm water bath. Rodinal (whichever version) is very well lasting.
The most modern recipe is ofcourse the most sophisticated and best. Also in the keeping properties.
R09 actually stands for "Rodinal formulation number 9". So in 1945 we were at formulation numer 9 which lets me anticipate that in 2005 we were probably at recipe change number 20. Differences are small but there were always reasons why Agfa made a change. But again this does not make the other product so bad that it couldn´t be used.
We have been quite upfront about APH09 all these years. On our website it states that this is the WWII formulation and that we use other raw materials (of a purer kind) for ADONAL. This also explains the price difference.
APH09 was our "cheap version" of ADONAL and I guess that´s why people bought it. No?
By no means do you have to discard APH09!
Differences are existing but they are not of a kind so that you have to take this radical step!

Stand development was very popular in Europe in the 20ies to 40ies. It can do one very important thing for you and that is doubling the ISO speed of the film.
Back in the 20ies when a high speed film had 50 ASA this was important and outran the downsides.
Today I would consider this more of an experimental technique than something soemone really should do.
However I explained the physics behind it over in the FX-39 thread (this forum) and believe me the physics are working.
You can effectively increase speed by local developer exhaustion in highly diluted developers.
This is why we promote the old Agfa agitation method (10 seconds agitation- 50 seconds stand) for development over rotation.

My most recent APUG Blind Print Exchange submission (BPX18) was an 8x10 contact print from a fully stand developed sheet of FP4+ film. The reciprocity-corrected base exposure was 420 seconds (7 minutes). It was processed using Adonal/Rodinal at 1+100 for 60 minutes without any further agitation beyond an initial 60 seconds.

I sat in the dark for an hour patiently waiting. Next time I'm getting one of those watertight paper safes.

Both the recipient and I were thrilled with the resulting photograph. Given the subject matter, the negative could not have been successfully processed in any other way.

No. I think Rodinal is great stuff--for Rodinal fans. I'm glad they're still making it. Every little bit helps the profit numbers of a film company, I'm all for. Glad Adox is out there. You gotta remember, I just spout baloney sometimes just to take the edge off from my nature of spouting profundities all the time.

Also, Mirko, I agree with the other poster, can we get a special run of glass bottles with the Rodinal label?? OR even just a special run of water resistant labels to put on our own glass bottles?

My step father is a packaging salesman, he can produce custom labels and ship them to freestyle to be included as a special edition or something like that? If using glass bottles with chemical in them is too much of a hassle, at least let us label our own?

Once again FINALY I don't have to defend my statements!!

Anyway also 1:100 stand does work, it's just not ideal for everything.

Thanks for this information Mirko. I still have a bottle and a half of Adonal on hand so I won't need any Rodinal for a bit.

Maybe if Tom and Stone can sort out who will print these new labels I'll pick up a couple labels and transfer my Adonal into re-labeled brown glass bottles.

Correct, my R09 One Shot from 2010 is just as genuine.
 
I wish I hadn't thrown out all those Agfa Rodinal glass bottles from the seventies and eighties and...

Bring back the glass campaign!

Ugh, no, I specifically always say the most recent before the company shut down. I'm very specific with phrasing on that one
 
So, for clarity's sake, as I've just read through this thread and am still not sure, some questions for Mirko:

1) Is this new bottle labeled Rodinal identical to the Compard R09 One Shot or not?

2) Is Foma R09 identical to Adox APH09?

3) I've been using the Compard R09 One Shot for the past few years. Do I need to change my times if I get the new Adox Rodinal??

Not if this bottle has been produced past 2011/2012. Yes if it has been produced before that time.

At some point it was. I don´t now if it still is. They might be making their own or live still on the last shippment (which was quite large).

The pH- values of the two developers are very close so I would expect the differences to be below the influence of other factors.
But this depends on the accuracy of your workflow setup and ofcourse on the dilution.
In the very high dilutions the differences might become more obvious.

The main difference is the buffering system, the grain surpression additive (the amount is so small that it can´t possibly have ben caught properly in the analysis) and some tweaking.
The amount of paraminophenol is probably close.
That´s how we updated APH09 in 2004 when we changed it from 1+40 to 1+50 dilution (respective 1+20 to 1+25) in order to level in the developing times with by then Agfa made Rodinal. It only took a few mixings and we got so close that one could easily exchange the two without noticeable adjustments of developing time in the standard dilutions.
I am sure the competing company has done the same for their "one shot" developer.

The other main difference between APH09/R09 (Foma) is the quality evel of the paraminohenol. This substance can be purchased really cheaply in China but then it looks like coffe. For ADONL we use a specially purified version which is white and absolutely clear on the day of mixing. It then darkens over time in the bottle. But you should get a clearer version o the day of purchase (theoretically).
APH09 is brown to start with. This is the main reason why it can be made available at a lower price than ADONAL/RODINAL.
Some people say it matters others say it does not. I prefer the clear version when I look into the kettle but I guess only we at ADOX can make use of this "joy"

Just so I am not misunderstood: I am not saying that the other versions of Rodinal produced by other companies are in any way bad and should not be used.
I just share my knowledge so you can make your choice based on relevant informations.
After all we are still offering APH09 ourselves. It´s another choice on the market, so is Fomas R09.
Ofcourse we welcome any purchase of our RODINAL but I would never expect anyone to discard a bottle of APH09/R09 or whatever now and get RODINAL instead. No need to do that ;-)

Our labels are to some extend repositionable
The problem with glass bottles lies, ofcourse, in the shipping.
We could fill and cap them but the styrofoam shipping protecting container runs around 15 USD.
So rebottling at home is by far the best.
Whoever wants to print his own Rodinal sticker for home use has my aproval
