It looks like View Camera magazine has ceased production. This is a real shame - even though the magazine was full of typos and the publisher an 'interesting' character who certainly rubbed many people the wrong way... It was 28 years of articles specific to large format photography, and I really looked forward to getting my copy every other month.

Marc!

Just today I mentioned to my wife that I wondered why I wasn't receiving View Camera anymore. That is a shame.

Not happy to hear this! I was lucky enough to have some of my work published in that magazine a couple years ago. At least I have the online magazine, Looking Glass to look forward to. but that's it. All the other magazines I subscribed to are gone.

Yeah, sad to hear this news, specifically since I recently renewed my subscription for another two years and had only received one issue which was a duplicate of the last issue of my previous subscription. Really though I have always enjoyed the magazine and will miss it.

The last issue I received was September/October 2015, arrived here 9 April 2016. Is anyone aware of any subsequent issues?

I'm very sorry to see this fine publication end.

I think that I remember Steve Simmons being in this group in the past. I, too, am sorry to see View Camera go. There always seemed to be at least one issue (or more) a year with articles that made the subscription price worth every penny (or maybe I should say "dollar"). I don't see anything, right now, that will come close to taking its place............Regards!

I sent them $97.00 for magazine and 2 tech Pub's 2 months ago and they don't respond to my emails.
In my opinion they are crooks and should refund our money!!!
I guess I will try to go after them through Paypal.

Just wanted to let ya'll know they have discounted the telephone.
Sent email through Paypal for refund but I doubt I will get anything back!

the demise of a legend; it had some great articles over the years...steve was a lone publisher; pretty cool he lasted this long
honestly any chastizing of this guy is out of line. I'm sorry but sometimes you buys your ticket and you pays the price...
Bob get some back issues...maybe I'll send you some!
best, peter

Also kind of sad that only 10 people even responded to a RIP?? what's up folks; just developing times??
Welcome to the internet
Best, peter

There have been other threads, and many other responses.

He responded to Paypal request. And finally sent a passphrase and said he would ship Tech Pub's.
I always expect business and individuals on the internet or in person to be fair and not try to take advantage of you. I know this doesn't always happen.

If I remember correctly, the magazine was started in Sacramento by Steve Simmons about 30 years ago. He did architectural work back then. I would see him at the old camera store called Lightwork. Back in the 80's and 90's Sacramento had it's own photo district with a rental darkroom, a photo supply store and 2 film labs. It's all gone now

But I wish luck to Steve. I met him a couple of times. A nice guy.

Well, crap ...

So is there a magazine of similar ilk left?

Steve's book "Using the View Camera" has been a great resource, and I recommend it to anyone just starting out in large format.

Yep, agree on that - it was and still is a great resource. Can't comment on the magazine or ol' Steve - but sad when things go out of business.

I think the demographic of photographers that shoot LF is very small. A magazine needs eyes on ads to get the revenue. I think what might be a better alternative is to have an online version and put up a pay wall.

I thought it died years ago.

Partly my fault...my subscription ran out and since I was moving, I waited far too long to renew. I got a subscription starting with the first issue. It was a great magazine; it had my first published images (and even sold a print to someone as a result), and it always was great to see images and writings of photographers I knew or were familiar with as well as those I did not know. I taught myself carbon printing using the instructions in an article in the Nov/Dec 1990 issue.

Thank you Steve for the years of hard work putting it together.

Sad to see it go, but not surprised, the last few issues have been a little grim. Few ads other than for the magazine or Steve's workshops.

I was a subscriber for about 10 years, early 90s to early 00s, still shooting LF. Lots of good stuff from that period.

Having been a member of Apug for sometime and also a subscriber to View Camera mag since 1998, I always read the posts, it really surprises me that no one has had a go at Steve Simmonds for his lack of decency. I like many lost out on the my last subscription, not much though, but what gets me is, he never apologized for what had happened. It was basically this is the story, see you later. You would think after all the years people have supported him, he would be a little more gracious. I'll miss the magazine, but not the mistakes, and will look forward to a more comprehensive word from SS if he can be so humble. Thanks, Richard
