Just got some 4x5 Fidelity dark slides. Lo and behold, one side is black, and other one is red. I have not seen a darkslide like this before. Did they originally come with this?

Yeah thats what I am guessing. Well it will be easier for me to remember if its exposed or unexposed. one of the darkslides has the black side a bit worn out, and it seems to be red underneath.

Black and red dark slides for Fidelity holders are very common in Japan, as are black and red dark cloths. Whether they were painted locally or came like that from Fidelity, I can't say. Interestingly, I've seen very few Toyo holders like this. Perhaps yours came from Japan, or if you bought them in the US, the seller had bought them from me.

That makes sense, I did get this from a seller from Japan. Thanks for the information.

Since both tabs are silver, I guess the red side means unexposed film. Black means exposed?
I rather would expect the contrary... for handling this makes more sense.
BUT then at exposure the red side would face the film. Not good.

EDIT:
My second sentence of course is complete nonsense!

I believe you are right.

I mean: Red = Caution , latent image

I'd paint one side of the handle area black on each darkslide -- just so I can quickly double-check I got an unexposed sheet loaded towards the lens (can't see the darkslide) before I start pulling the darkslide up. Especially if I was mixing them up with standard holders.

As I'm sure you'll recall but others here may not know, the Tachihara/Hope-branded WP and 6x10 holders sold for the corresponding Rittreck View expansion backs have red/black darkslides like this.
