Why does the rb on my RB67 rotate clockwise to the vertical position instead of counterclockwise? If it rotated counterclockwise I could actually get the dark slide in-out when in vertical mode. But as it stands, the slide hits my tripod head tilt lever.

that can be a problem but not a big deal. how about putting the tilt arm up front?

Square is not a problem it is the perfect format. That is what Hasselblad said. Rollei and Mamiya TLRs used it too. You are just stretching it.

if square were the perfect format, then why does your perfect format waste so much printing paper? seems someone thinks 8x10 11x14 16x20.... etc etc etc are more perfect to the golden rule.

also the majority of cameras arent square format.... just a few misfits to please the misfits are.

personally, i don't care either way and do shoot squares now n again.

its all fun.

those blinders are 4x5

The other obvious reason to rotate the back to the right is to keep all of the winding stuff on the right hand of the camera. Imagine the ergonomics of turning the film lever upwards from behind and above the camera, with the left hand. I'm left-handed and even I don't like that idea. Then there's the problem of adding more complex and vulnerable linkages between the camera and the back for an operation that no one will ever perform.

Something that I never thought of trying while I had mine: can you remove the back the back mounts on and rotate it 180 so the film wind lever is bottom and left, instead of top and right?

There are European papers that are closer to square. The shape format of papers in the US is because of the standard paper sizes and have nothing to do with photography.

If you need a better binder try Kaopectate or boiled rice. It is all fun.

I notice there are "portrait" or vertical format RB backs. Since 90% of my shots are vertical this might largely solve my problem, and would only ruin my relatively rare horizontal shots if I forgot to rotate it. Are these identical to the normal horizontal backs in every other way, or do they have other quirks I should know about?

Portrait is the "natural" orientation of the 645 back, landscape for 6x7. Both can rotate to the other orientation.

No rule against leaving the back in the rotated position.

The original RB on the Graflex rotates in either direction. Stick with the original.

I don't think a Graflex will mount to my RB. But that would be a cool Frankincamera if it did.
